Forgotten book

I am trying to find a great book I read years ago. It was set in India during the Second World War, I think the heroine was a nurse and she married a British soldier and was based in Rawalpindi. She had met and fallen in love while in England with a half caste Indian. They reset in India during war and had an affair. The story is partly told by her daughter who discovers that her mother had three other children with the Indian half caste after her husband (the daughters father) died. She thought her mother was travelling but had been going backwards and forwards to India leading a double life. The daughter goes to India to meet her half siblings when her mother dies.

It is driving me mad trying to remember what it was called!
