what are you reading August 2017?

Post by MLE (Emily Cotton) » Tue August 1st, 2017, 5:00 pm

I'm reading Rutherford's Sarum. It's rather a slog at the moment--nothing wrong with the book, I think it's my mood. And in non-fiction, I'm reading The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise, which is a huge pile of original documents from all sides. I must confess it disturbs me to discover that the Arabic studies departments in most western universities are heavily dependent on grants from the House of Saud, and if any scholars/professors bring up data or documents that cast a negative light, their funding is cut off.

Wow.

I read Sarum years ago and loved it. It's one I really should read again.

I've got too many things cooking:

The Dark Prophecy (The Trials of Apollo, #2) by Rick Riordan (YA, but I would have loved all Riordan's books about mythology as a kid) was on hold at eLibrary NJ and came through today, so I am temporarily putting aside HF The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict. I've had three NF languishing for quite a while: Four Queens: The Provençal Sisters Who Ruled Europe by Nancy Goldstone, Victoria: The Queen: An Intimate Biography of the Woman Who Ruled an Empire by Julia Baird and Becoming Queen Victoria: The Tragic Death of Princess Charlotte and the Unexpected Rise of Britain's Greatest Monarch by Kate Williams. Yes, I am somewhat of a Queen Victoria aficionado. It's been so long since I've been reading Four Queens that I think I need to start over. I can pick up the Queen Victoria books anytime and get right back into them.

Ides of April by Lindsey Davis.
Into battle we ride with Gods by our side
We are strong and not afraid to die
We have an urge to kill and our lust for blood has to be fulfilled
WE´LL FIGHT TILL THE END! And send our enemies straight to Hell!

I've got that one, Vanessa, would love to know what you think of it!

I've just started "The Hanging Tree" by Ben Aaronovitch, and am about halfway through "the Dry" by Jane Harper.

I'm reading Arthur The King by Allan Massie. So far I find it quite funny actually: from the style to the fact it's so loosely based on the tale of Arthur
