Death of Helen Dunmore

Postby annis » Sun June 11th, 2017, 7:22 pm

Just caught up on the fact that British poet and historical novelist, Helen Dunmore, has died. She had been suffering from cancer for some time. A reminder to get on to reading her last historical novel, https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/mar/19/birdcage-walk-review-helen-dunmore-georgian-bristol, set in Britol, England at the time of the French Revolution.

I haven't read any of her books, but Exposure is on my wish list. It's inspired by Edith Nesbit's The Railway Children, telling the story of what was going on with their father. May have to look for that one sooner rather than later.

Sad news. I've never never read any of her books but have a few on my TBR pile. I will have to dig one out to read.

Interest in HF: Have always loved it. Just listened to the Reith Lectures by Hilary Mantel. So inspired that I've written my own HF novel set in turn-of-the-century Vienna. I'm interested in all fiction and love historical fiction that's well-written and brings the past to life.
Favorite HF book: Wolf Hall.
Preferred HF: No. The way the novel is written is more important than the period it discusses.

Very sad about Helen Dunmore. I've read quite a few of her books and remember hearing her at a book reading of the Great Coat - what I assume is the only ghost story she's ever written. The poem she wrote before her death, thankful for her life, moved me to tears. I'm looking forward to reading Birdcage Walk.
