Goodreads Book Challenge

Post by Nefret » Thu January 1st, 2015, 4:37 pm

Happy New Year, my dear bibliophiles! I have set myself a goal of 50 books for this year. This is my first year for setting a specific goal. Last year I was not so good at listing all my reads. I would like to read new books, rather than re-reading ones I already liked. So, I would like suggestions for HF or non-fiction, please. Check out my reading logs to get an idea of my taste. Thanks!

My goal is the same as last year, 100. I used to try for higher, but then ended up scrambling at the end of the year and reading too many novellas :p

I'll be targeting 50 again this year - that was my goal in the last two years, when I read 64 and 61 books respectively. I don't want to set it higher than 50 though as I don't want to feel pressured into quicker reads when I feel like taking on something longer or more more substantial.

Nefret, good thing you're looking for new reads, I've found that Goodreads isn't great for listing rereads, especially with regards to the challenge or if you keep track of page count.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.
Location: California Bay Area

That's a good point, lady B. Maybe instead of cataloguing 'books' for a goal, you could count something like hours reading (or listening, in the case of audiobooks)? Or maybe by page/word count.

Goodreads lists the page count in the stats section, so I tend to check there. It only works though if you don't do rereads and all the books have number of pages listed in their data.

...I do keep an Excel spreadsheet as well of my entire library, what I've read etc, categorised into genres and complete with info on page numbers, time settings for HF, and so on ;) totally uninteresting to anyone but me but I love it!

Have you considered making a shelf for reread books? Sort of like I do with 2014 Mt TBR Challenge. Easier for me to go back and see how many they actually were.

My Goodreads goal is also 50 for 2015. I've been making that every year and I don't think I can raise it until I retire from teaching. I just cannot read as much during the school year as I do in the summer.

I always list a 100 and I honestly give it my best try but I never make it. By God, one of these days I will surprise myself though and actually reach it!!

My re-reads will be The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, my two favourite books.

Good idea, I don't do that many rereads at the moment, but if I do, that's a better way to keep track.

By the way if anyone wants to add me on Goodreads as a friend, I'm listed as Lisa, with the same avatar as I use here. Probably impossible to find but if I pop up on a book review or something feel free to add me, I need more friends on that site!
