Happy New Year!
I'm reading Christine Weightman's biography of Margaret of York and Amy Licence's In Bed With the Tudors (about childbirth and related topics in Tudor England).

I've had to abandon two older romances the last couple of days. I have Mary Stewart's Madam Will you Talk for a buddy read at GR, plus I just started Tangled Dreams by Julie Tetel. Another romance, but it's shaping up to be just right for a cold, frosty morning.
At home with a good book and the cat...

Half through The Hobbit and staring at the massive A Dance With Dragons and wondering if I have the strength (literally to hold it--wish I'd got it on the Nook!) and figuratively (do I want to commit to so long a book, so early in the year.)

Finally broke down and bought a bunch of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books. Thoroughly enjoyed "Shards of Honor" and "Barrayar" and am starting "Warrior's Apprentice".

I have a stack of research reading to do to catch up. I'm currently re-reading John Guy's biography of Thomas Becket. I skim read it before, but now I'm concentrating. The usual popular history problems of 'May have' 'possibly' 'quite likely' 'probably' In other words making assumptions. There are historical errors - mainly nit-picks, but if I know they are errors and I'm not a historian, then what does that say about the historian? However, despite the above grumps, he assesses Becket well. He's got a good eye for the psychology of a situation. Henry II fans are not going to like the bad press that Henry gets, but I suspect Guy is pretty close to the truth.

Have just finished a mystery series set in modern Iceland by Michael Ridpath. Last one finished on a real cliffhanger, but will probably have to wait a year or so for the next one to come out- curses!
Various ancient Icelandic heroes and heroines feature along with the Icelandic Sagas, so have decided it's long past time for me to read the original sagas. Coincidentally I recently read Naomi Mitchison's YA novel based on the Landnámabók called The Land the Ravens Found. It's a story about Aud the Deep-Minded and the early settlers of Iceland (Aud also features in Rosemary Sutcliff's YA novel Sword Song).
Keep meaning to get to those- really enjoyed her Chalion trilogy and Sharing Knife series. Finally broke down and bought a bunch of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books.
