Hence the request for more suggestions pre-King Alfred time period.
Has anyone else suggested Carla's excellent Paths of Exile- it's about the young Edwin of Northumbria in the years before he became king.

Also recommended (but unfortunately OP), Kathleen Herbert's Cumbria trilogy, which all feature members of different royal families and are set in the 6th/7th centuries:

1) Bride of the Spear (aka Lady of the Fountain)
Follows the difficult relationship between Prince Owain, son of King Urien of Cumbria and Taniu, daughter of King Loth of the Gododdin

2) Queen of the Lightning
Riemmelth, the "Queen of the Lightning" of the title, is the last of Cumbria'a royal line. To ensure the safety of Cumbria, Riemmelth is forced into marriage with her hated enemy, Oswy, a Prince of Bernicia.

3) Ghost in the Sunlight
Riemmelth's daughter, Alchflaed of Bernicia, stirs up dark secrets from the past when she acts as peaceweaver and marries Peada, the son of Penda, king of Mercia.
You could, of course, make it even harder by adding the separate Scots and Welsh kingdoms, too and make the challenge slightly less anglo-centric.
SGM-I include them in the challenge when possible, but if you think finding books based in "England" before William the Conqueror was difficult, this might be damn near impossible.

Annis-the books you listed have all been recommended (and added to my list), thank you!!

Ok so I'm up to Henry III and Edward I. Any additional suggestions for Edward I and Edward III? I'm pretty well covered on Edward II. Thanks!

Well if you don't mind scholarly books, I'm reading "Edward I" by Michael Prestwich, it's actually very interesting.

Edward III:

Michael Packe, King Edward III (a little dated, but entertaining).

Michael Prestwich, The Three Edwards (not to be confused with the Thomas Costain by the same title).

Vanora Bennett, The People's Queen (Alice Perrers--I haven't read it).

Anne O'Brien also has a novel about Alice coming out next year, I think.

Molly Costain Haycraft, The Lady Royal (Edward III's daughter Isabel) (HF)

Juliet Dymoke, Lady of the Garter (Joan of Kent--a little dated on the research now, but fun).

Edward I:

Molly Costain Haycraft, The King's Daughters (HF about several of Edward I's daughters)

Vanessa Alexander, The Love Knot (HF about Edward I's daughter Joan of Acre and Ralph Monthermer--Alexander is a pseduonym of author Paul Doherty).
