I didn't check out any of the attached lists, but Philippa Gregory's Earthly Joys has the main character in a gay relationship. It's set in 17th century England, & I believe there are ships in it too.

Just finished Eromenos by Melanie McDonald which is a literary take on the relationship between Emperor Hadrian and his doomed lover Antinous. It's a quiet little book written in the first person from Antinous' POV. There is sex, but it takes second place to the relationship.

I've been scanning this thread and haven't seen the name of Mary Renault. One can hardly discuss LGBT historical fiction without that name coming up. And of course E. M. Forster's Maurice which I consider historical considering when it was released. None of them have much sea-faring aspect though.

Hi JR :) I did mention Mary Renault and Paul Waters back a way, but it's all too easy to lose stuff among the tangled threads.

Hi, annis. Very true or when trying to play catch up one's eyes can begin to cross.

Anyway, I've raised her name again which can't be a bad thing. :)

And that of Forster's Maurice which I have always considered historical (although I don't know that most people do) because it was published so long after the story takes place.

Saw the movie version of Maurice not too long ago with Hugh Grant. I thought it was well done.
