August 2011 Book of the Month: Poll

Post by boswellbaxter » Tue June 7th, 2011, 12:33 pm

We have a small field to choose from this time! Voting closes June 10.

Queen by Right by Anne Easter Smith
In Cecily Neville, duchess of York and ancestor of every English monarch to the present day, she has found her most engrossing character yet.History remembers Cecily of York standing on the steps of the Market Cross at Ludlow, facing an attacking army while holding the hands of her two young sons. Queen by Right reveals how she came to step into her destiny, beginning with her marriage to Richard, duke of York, whom she meets when she is nine and he is thirteen. Raised together in her father’s household, they become a true love match and together face personal tragedies, pivotal events of history, and deadly political intrigue. All of England knows that Richard has a clear claim to the throne, and when King Henry VI becomes unfit to rule, Cecily must put aside her hopes and fears and help her husband decide what is right for their family and their country. Queen by Right marks Anne Easter Smith’s greatest achievement, a book that every fan of sweeping, exquisitely detailed historical fiction will devour.
Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn
An exciting debut: a vivid, richly imagined saga of ancient Rome from a masterful new voice in historical fiction

Thea is a slave girl from Judaea, passionate, musical, and guarded. Purchased as a toy for the spiteful heiress Lepida Pollia, Thea will become her mistress's rival for the love of Arius the Barbarian, Rome's newest and most savage gladiator. His love brings Thea the first happiness of her life-that is quickly ended when a jealous Lepida tears them apart.

As Lepida goes on to wreak havoc in the life of a new husband and his family, Thea remakes herself as a polished singer for Rome's aristocrats. Unwittingly, she attracts another admirer in the charismatic Emperor of Rome. But Domitian's games have a darker side, and Thea finds herself fighting for both soul and sanity. Many have tried to destroy the Emperor: a vengeful gladiator, an upright senator, a tormented soldier, a Vestal Virgin. But in the end, the life of the brilliant and paranoid Domitian lies in the hands of one woman: the Emperor's mistress.

The only reason I'm voting for AES's is because I already read Mistress of Rome. It was a pretty good book though btw. I've only read Daughter of York by AES and I liked it very much aside from the language. I don't like all the tis and messires and so forth.

Wow only two books. I think this is the lowest turn out ever!

I'll vote for AES as I loved "Rose for a Crown." Although I wasn't too enthused by "Daughter of York." It was like she went from a great love story to a book about a woman who never really had a chance to love deeply (beyond her family).

Kate Quinn is very nice (you can find her on the GoodReads forums) and an excellent writer, but personally I'm not a fan of the Roman era.
I blog about all things writing and historical at Caroline Wilson Writes!

I'm also on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads!

Now Available: "Rebel Heart," a romantic historical fiction set in Civil War America and Victorian England.

Available at Amazon

She was on here for a while, but left. Has she written about any other time period?

And the winner is Queen by Right! Please join in on the discussion in August if you nominated it or voted for it (or even if you didn't)--we're counting on you!
