I would bet that your guess is right, Rebecca: Philippa Gregory is weary of the whole process, and she isn't giving it her best. Maybe she is under contract to produce x number of books in x amount of time, and she is purposely churning out poorly-written novels until the contract expires and she can go rest on her royalties from TOBG.
This could be very true. Maybe she wants more freedom but can't get it. It could be that after her contract is over she'll try for more money and less books. Who knows.
She does have a devoted fandom (read the message boards at her website), but you still have to wonder how much they'll take. Not to sound like a broken record but just look at the reviews for Land of the Painted Caves, Amazon US or UK. I've rarely seen anything like it, and many are from hard-core dedicated and now very much ticked off fans.

Definitely library only. This kind of material is not worth lining anyone's pockets with. And I am cynical.
I got into a debate about her books on someone's blog. Hardcore fan.

MLE--"Maybe she is under contract to produce x number of books in x amount of time, and she is purposely churning out poorly-written novels until the contract expires..."

You may have a point. I do remember watching an interview of J.K Rowling who basically said that she had boxed herself in by agreeing to publish a Harry Potter book almost yearly until its conclusion. In the interview she admitted that was her mistake. Perhaps Philippa Gregory has done the same thing, if this is the case then I hope she learns from her mistakes because her recent efforts have been sloppy to say the least. I do blame the publishers though and their lack of integrity which borders on contempt for the reader. Now upon saying that it is also up to the reader to insist on a better quality of writing and speak with their wallets or purses and refuse to buy what is second rate writing.

But I still do not understand why PG chooses to write about these interesting personalities at the most boring time of their lives ie MQoS during her captivity as one example. That is what I don't get about her at all.

I will go and read the reviews though I have no intention of reading her books. They're simply not my cup of tea. When it comes to PG and her publishers-- I take umbrage at the mindset that the reader will accept any old rubbish so long as it carries her name, it smacks of contempt for the readership of her books. As I said in a previous post I don't even mind if she takes liberties with the truth so long as the story line is gripping but lately her work is simply sloppy at best and boring and repetive at worst. I wont be buying anymore of her books until she improves, because I know she can do better.
