While England Sleeps by David Leavitt

Post by JaneConsumer » Fri September 5th, 2008, 8:34 pm

My earlier review, reposted here:

Set against the rise of fascism in Europe (1936-1938) and the Spanish Civil War, Leavitt tells a coming of age story that deals with sexual confusion, homosexuality and class differences. I found the story almost (but not quite) as compelling as McCann's As Meat Loves Salt. I read it in 2 sittings. But while I enjoyed it (4.5/5 stars), I am once again awed by McCann's ability to convey emotional trauma without the kind of graphic sex scenes you'll find in While England Sleeps.

Here's the full review.
