The Day is a White Tablet by Jill Fletcher Pelaez

Post by Leyland » Mon July 7th, 2014, 7:58 pm

The Day is a White Tablet is for readers wanting an extremely well written, researched and action driven story. The setting is within the immediate months following the surrender of the Civil War and the action takes place from Georgia down into the Florida wilderness. Not many novels include the struggles of pioneer refugees as they forge dangerous paths from established farms and fields of the pre-war South into the dangerous tropical Florida bush country and coastline. Violence and kindness, loyalty and treachery are found in ever changing situations among the wide cast of characters encountered in the journey of the main character, Tench.

Tench is a teenaged mixed race boy, able to read and write, and possessing a strong sense of loyalty to all family members (of any ethnic origin) of several generations. His perseverance and desire to find any of his surviving family members in the aftermath of the surrender are illuminated by his inner thoughts of doubt and fear which he chronicles on white paper tablets. He finds courage and inspires deep loyalty on his journey among fellow travelers who include General John C. Breckinridge and Naval Officer John Taylor Wood.

This is not an ordinary Civil War story by any means.
