When the bodies of two infants are discovered in the gardens of a quiet, elegant square in London, Charlotte Ellison, a Victorian policeman's wife, and her sister Emily conduct an unorthodox inquiry into the secret scandals of Callander Square.

This is the second of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. They have married between the first book, The Cater Street Hangman, and this book, and have settled down into a comfortable domestic life. Though her younger sister, Emily, is happily married, she finds life a bit boring so the two of them insert themselves into the investigation in an effort to help Thomas, but also to alleviate boredom.
Another delightful read in the series!
