Hugh and Bess by Susan Higginbotham

Post by Susan » Fri August 7th, 2009, 1:21 am

I just finished Hugh and Bess by Susan Higginbotham (our own boswellbaxter) and I enjoyed it as much as her first novel The Traitor's Wife. Writing about real people who are less well known (or not really known at all) very much appeals to me. I appreciate learning about how they might have lived, what their relations were with the more well known people, and how they might have viewed the time period they lived in. Another plus for me is that Susan has continued the Despenser family saga since the Hugh in the title is the son of the two main characters in The Traitor's Wife. Thank you, Susan, for introducing me to Hugh and Bess, two very engaging people.

I just finished this as well. Must write review as soon as the eyes open up a bit further.

**grumble**

I have no idea what awful language I put in my review but it's not showing up on Amazon. You can also read it here.

Thanks, Misfit! (Maybe Amazon got mad at your describing Isabella as the old she-wolf?) :)

By the way, I've arrived! The novelist who's been tagging all sorts of historical novels on Amazon with the name of his own book has tagged Hugh and Bess! (Fourteenth-century England, eighteenth-century Poland--I'm sure there's a connection there somewhere.)

Heee, I had noticed that this morning. Now you can stand right up there with Du Maurier. How much time do you think all that tagging takes anyway?

Maybe he sets aside a little tag time each day. He doesn't seem to have tagged Philippa Gregory's latest yet--I think that's a glaring omission there!
