Went back through my Amazon.co.uk orders and finally found it...
The Shores of Midnight, by Janet Tanner.
Wow, my brain cells are burning out far too rapidly.

Joan, it's a novel where the characters go back in time - or come forward, so part of the book is set in the now and part is set in a different period, or a character from one era goes into another. Say like Barbara Erskine's Lady of Hay or Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series.
Les proz e les vassals
Souvent entre piez de chevals
Kar ja li coard n’I chasront

'The Brave and the valiant
Are always to be found between the hooves of horses
For never will cowards fall down there.'
