I'm another to have borrowed the novel from the library.

To add to Susan's post, the Greek Church, aka the Orthodox Christian Church, was mentioned as a model of how the church should be and an interest to become of part of it. Well, that idea went by the wayside in the story!
On the authority bit, in the Orthodox Church, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is first among equals. His scope of authority is limited.
