How sad, but what a legacy she has left us. Coincidentally I am re-reading some of her books at the moment. I've just finished This Rough Magic and I'm on the Moonspinners at the moment. I guess they are part of my comfort read shelf.

Yes definitely comfort reads - some wonderful locations and pure escapism.
Spooky coincidence - I'm currently reading "Airs above the Ground" which is set partly in Vienna - the two main protagonists went to the Hotel Sacher and of course mentioned Sachertorte - at work today someone brought in....yes a Sachertorte from that same hotel. Not the sort of cake we usually have here (Tesco or Sainsbury's or home-made)!

A sad loss to the literary world but a great age indeed. I think I shall bump up one of her books on the TBR pile as a tribute and celebration of her life.

There is such a wonderful twist in the middle of Airs. You'll know what I mean when you get there. I love her books, all those exotic locations.

Ah, I'm so sorry to hear this.
I can still remember where I was - the bookstore, the day, the summertime I was fourteen - when I found The Hollow Hills and The Crystal Cave. It's been some time, but these are the books I've "re-run" more than almost any others (Hitchhiker's probably does give MS a run.) It's her books I think of when I think about what I'd like my writing to do - to be that book some kid finds on a shelf someday, maybe a nice dusty actual-paper book, that they just fall into completely. What she did for me, I can only hope ever to do.

Thank you, Madeleine. I'd put a smiley in here at you but given we're discussing an obit for someone whose work we so loved I'll depend on your knowing it's yours un-typed.

Loved her work and have reread several of her books the last few years. So happy we had her for so long.
