Re: Covers! commentary and samples
With genealogy and all the old photos I've inherited, I've gotten fairly good at identifying women's clothing by era from about the 1850s onward. So when I saw this I had to resurrect this topic. The dress on this cover is from the 1890s - as soon as I saw it, I thought "I wonder if it's set in the ...

Re: Accuracy in Historical Novels
This sounds like it only applies to England and it’s Wikipedia but: “In the Middle Ages stringent rules were laid down, in this latter respect, by the canon law in the case of confessions by women and especially nuns. In England, before the Protestant Reformation, publicity was reckoned the best saf...

Re: Accuracy in Historical Novels
I think she can get away with it because 1491 isn't that far off the 1500s. I get that private confessions probably came as a result of the Reformation, so no matter how close it is, 1491 is still pre-Reformation. But I do believe that there have always been individuals throughout history who were "...

"A Well Behaved Woman" - an ARC from NetGalley. I'm 1/3 into it and so far, it's just okay.

Re: Pet Hate in hf
My pet hate is the issue of sex. Modern authors very frequently have people copulating with no thought of the biological consequences. Sex = babies. Back then, EVERYBODY knew this, although apparently it doesn't show up on many a modern writer's brainscan. When there often isn't enough to eat for 6...

Re: Pet Hate in hf
Dialogue is important but it doesn't need to sound super authentically historical, it just needs to be void of any noticeably modern words or phrases. In fact, some authors try to hard to make it sound historical and it actually just comes off as forced and hokey. For me, there are certain specific ...

Re: Dejavu book covers
I swear I've seen this photo on another cover: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51LEOolOnXL.jpg I hope I'm not just thinking of this one: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510xRpLXrWL.jpg Noooo! I thought this one was going to be one of these but it's not! This is so annoying. https://imag...

Re: Dejavu book covers
Same photoshoot - I wasn't sure at first because the model is so small on The Alice Network cover, but if you do the "look inside" thing on Amazon, you can see a bigger version and it's definitely the same hat/neck warmer. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51ggDGTRWsL.jpg https://ima...

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51eg5Q8BP6L.jpg Maybe the same woman as: Has this been posted? I really feel like this is the woman from that Elizabethan ruff, but I think it's just the same model in a different photoshoot, not the Elizabethan photo with major photoshopping: http:/...
