Re: What are you reading September 2015

About three-quarters of the way into "Early Warning" by Jane Smiley, the second in her current family saga trilogy. It's really quite plodding, compared to the first book. I'm losing track of who is whose child and not sure I care too much. It doesn't feel like her heart is in it particularly.

Re: What are you reading August 2015

Recently finished "The Garfield Honour" by Frank Yerby. Have never read him before. Definitely dated, but very readable and a distinctive style that I really enjoyed. Will certainly read more of his books.

Have just started a re-read of "The Maid" by Kimberley Cutter.

Re: What are you reading August 2015

Can't remember when I last updated, but the last two historical novels I read recently were very good or excellent: "The Invention of Wings" by Sue Monk Kidd (possibly my favourite HF read this year) and "Some Luck" by Jane Smiley. Currently reading something much more lightweight and less impressiv...

Re: July 2015 What are you reading?

In between book-group reads, I've picked up again "Isabel", the novel based on the first season of the Spanish historical drama series of the same name.

I'm just about to finish "Some Luck" by Jane Smiley, the first in her new multi-generational trilogy starting in 1920. I've never read her before. It took me a while to get used to her style but overall I've really enjoyed this book.
Just finished The Miniaturist. Its a page turner, and the author has done her research, but ultimately a dead ender, depressing and unsettling, and you never are given the answer to the mystery of the title character.
Yes, I more or less agree. I did enjoy reading it and foun...
