Re: Abir Mukherjee
I really enjoyed A Rising Man. I loved the setting and I thought it was well researched. I liked the character of Sam Wyndham and his subtle sense of humour!! I was envisioning pots of maroon paint being sailed across the seas for the government buildings. It was entertaining and interesting. I wil...

Re: What Are You Reading December 2018?
Currently reading The Blood of Heaven by Kent Wascom, but I may not keep going. The prose is incredibly good, but the characters are violent wretches and the story is brutal.

Re: Favorite 2018 books
I, Claudius by Robert Graves - FINALLY got to this & glad I did Oh, yes, I Claudius is fantastic! Some of my favorites this year have been: Abir Mukherjee's genre-transcending mystery novels set in Colonial India: A Rising Man , A Necessary Evil , and (due out in early 2019) Smoke and Ashes . The T...

Re: Pet Hate in hf
"girl! and "wife" being used in titles I wonder how much of this is generated by agents, editors and publishers rather than the author. When I was trying to sell one of my own manuscripts, my agent suggested a title change. In my case, changing the title was a very good idea. But I can imagine ther...

Re: Vanessa’s Reading Log 2018
The Lingering Sigh. I love a good ghost story, too, but the really good ones don't come along too often. The last truly memorable one I read was Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, maybe a year or two ago, with a book group. I'm not sure it actually qualifies as a ghost story - but it certainly s...

Let us know how you like it, Vanessa, when you're finished. I always find it exciting to discover a new setting - even though I've read other novels set in India, this one took me to a person and place there that was really new to me.I’m just about to start A Rising Man

Re: Pet Hate in hf
the amount of historical novels that are titled "The such-and-such's daughter/wife" Yes, there are a lot of these! I do understand that a novel about the wife or daughter of a very famous man may attract more readers if titled "Attila's Wife" rather than "Kreka." But there's a lot of HF with titles...

Just copy and paste the image URL. If it's from Amazon, you should be able to right click the image and depending on the browser you're using, select the equivalent of "copy image address" then paste it into the img tags here, or "open image in new tab" and then copy and paste the URL from the addr...

Re: Covers! commentary and samples
I like the cover of Barbara Kingsolver's latest novel, Unsheltered. It's elegant and appropriate to the historical material - a period drawing of a carnivorous plant. Can anyone help me figure out how to include an image in a post? I see where the "image" icon is, but don't know how to grab the imag...
