Re: FYI: Forum board to close by Feb. 29th

Sad, but thank you for helping me learn about some great historical fiction over the years. I have now read through all the book icons on the site & found some "new" authors that I love.

Best to all of you!

Re: What Are You Reading? February 2024

Just finishing Ken Follett's The Armor of Light. Don't know how I missed this Kingsbridge Series book which was released last September, but I did. Anyway, very Folletty - which means good but a little formulaic. Nice to have the Battle of Waterloo & the Napoleonic Wars covered by this author. Also ...

Started listening to Beloved by Toni Morrison, then had to take a break from it. Now on something completely different that I am liking - Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

Re: What Are You Reading? Dec. 2023

Listening to The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. It's been on my TBR list forever & I previously liked Crossroads by the author so much, but so far this book is just depressing. I know it won the National Book Award & of course there was the Oprah thing, but however well he turns a phrase, I feel l...

Re: What Are You Reading? Dec. 2023

Listening to Sparrow by James Hynes, a pretty graphic story of a young slave boy who grows up in a brothel at the end of the Roman empire. Some interesting historical quotes thrown in. The book seems much more realistic than a lot of historical fiction, focusing on the lives of slaves rather than em...

Re: What Are You Reading? Dec. 2023

Reading The Mitford Affair by Marie Benedict, a novelization of British aristocratic sisters with divided loyalties leading up to WWII. Interesting that a couple of them became close to Hitler in the 1930s & were used as propaganda props before the UK & GB went to war.

Just finished Noble House by James Clavell. Setting was Hong Kong in 1963, so just barely historical fiction. I prefer his previous books, although this one was certainly action-packed. Not sure to what end though. Now starting The Land Beyond the Sea set in 1172 in the Kingdom of Jerusalem by Sharo...

Re: Seeking Recommendations for Historical Fiction Novels

You can't go wrong with any of the books that are icons on the website masthead. I don't know how I never read a James Clavell novel until last year, but I decided to read all 8 or so books listed & Shogun was my favorite among those I hadn't read before.

Currently listening to the epic book The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. The author reads the audiobook & does a fantastic job.
Just finished The Covenant of Water. Not that many books are epic & wonderful, but this one certainly is.
