LoisAnn's Reading List - 2011

JANUARY Scandalmonger , William Saffire ... 5/5 ... Fictional treatment of some of the real-life scandals plaguing some of Founding Fathers and how they were covered in the press during the 1790's. Fascinating, well-researched, well-documented. FEBRUARY Song of Troy , Colleen McCullough ... 5/5 ......

Read some good books in 2009 & some not so good. Of the good ones, the standout - the one that keeps coming back to me; that I will remember for a long time is:

The Book Thief, Marcus Zusak

LoisAnn's 2010 Reading List

January St. Peter's Fair , Ellis Peters ... 3.5/5. 4th Cadfael mystery. Typical Cadfael - entertaining, good way to pass some time, but nothing overly remarkable or memorable. The Piano Teacher , Janice Y.K. Lee ... 4/5. Set in Hong Kong, 1941 - 1953. Glad I read it, but not as good as I was hoping...

I so applaud all your efforts for the stray cats who have found their way to your home. Have you considered getting the momma cat spayed?
I particularly liked the way William was portrayed in the latter part of the book - his prickly, adolescent pretentiousness covering a deep well of insecurity was touching and real.
Leo, I heartily endorse all of your comments, but I particularly agree with your comment abo...

I'm nearly done with TTOS and what I really love are the details that bring substance, depth and life to stark historical facts. (Not a real profound statement, I know. :rolleyes :) Why else do we read historical fiction rather than an encyclopedia or other resource document? I love the description ...

Hmm, so now I see how to get a good conversation going - just mention a favorite author from our younger, teen-ager years!!! Victoria Holt was the first author I read when I moved from the Children's Library (upstairs) to the "Downstairs Library." Fast forward a generation later, & my daughter read ...
My mother gave me an old Boots Booklovers Library copy of Desiree to read when I was about 14, but for some reason it's taken me 20 years to get round to it. I wish I hadn't left it so long because I think I would have enjoyed it much more as a teenager.
You are exactl...

Just add me to the list of people who are completely captivated by this book! Every once in awhile, a book comes along that is just a cut above. It's not just the quality of writing, or the development of the characters, or the cleverness of the plot ... it's ALL that and it's MORE than that as well...

Vanessa, I quite agree with your comments about this book! Overall I was quite disappointed. I found I didn't care for any of the characters, with the exception of poor Mr. Whicher, and for the most part the book was very flat. I came away feeling just a bit cheated. I was expecting a "true crime th...
