Death of Helen Dunmore
Just caught up on the fact that British poet and historical novelist, Helen Dunmore, has died. She had been suffering from cancer for some time. A reminder to get on to reading her last historical novel, https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/mar/19/birdcage-walk-review-helen-dunmore-georgian-bristo...

Re: Salem Witch Trials
I thought "Susannah Morrow" by Megan Chance was pretty good, though it's some years since I read it. Another example of the confusing US/UK double title thingy - I read it under the English title "The Fatal Key".

"Viking Fire" by Justin Hill
Just finished Justin Hill's "Viking Fire", second book in his "Conquest" series based around the pivotal Battle of Hastings in 1066. I loved the first, ''Shieldwall", and seem to have been hanging out forever for this one, but it was well worth the wait. The last great Viking king, Harald Sigurdsson...

Re: Vikings
A heads-up about Justin Hill's latest novel, "Viking Fire", due out this September. It's the story of Harald Hardrada. In theory this is a follow-up to "Shieldwall", the first in Hill's trilogy set around the Norman Conquest of England. Not quite sure exactly how it fits in, though clearly Hardrada'...

Re: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell
I actually bought this novel some time ago and then lost it in my ever-expanding collection of books However, I have just started watching the TV series and enjoying its dark, off-beat vibe very much.

Having read lots of rave reviews I thought I'd give this series a go and did see it out to the end, was but disappointed by the schmaltzy Mills & Boons' treatment. I was reduced to helpless laughter every time the "gallop across the scenic clifftop" trope made yet another appearance to a sweeping so...

Have been waiting forever for a decent novel about the Battle of the Teutoberg Forest (deeply regret that Wallace Breem never wrote the one he had in mind). Looking forward to Ben's version. I've read Ben's freebie story The Shrine and the taster at the end of it for Eagles at War , so I'm keen to g...
