Secret societies of the Victorian era

The Victorians were obsessed with the secret society, the esoteric and spiritual. Does anyone know of any reference works or websites on this subject? This world features in fiction too and I would be interested to know of readers experiences of the subject.

Does Game of Thrones encourage HF reading?

Do people approve of series like Game of Thrones encouraging an interest in HF that might translating to book reading? The contrary view is that they are just soft porn for the masses.

I enjoyed Rome immensely but Spartacus is just awful and Game of Thrones little better in my humble opinion.
