I second Kate Grenville’s The Secret River. I would also say Bryce Courtenay’s Australian trilogy, although I’ve only read the first, The Potato Factory.

By far, my favourite Australian novel is Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang.

I'm in the opposite camp - there can never be too many adaptations of a classic. I'll watch them all, the good, bad and the ugly. I saw the two adaptations of Frenchmen's Creek in the past couple of weeks and would watch more if they had been made!
