The Last Caesar looks interesting. Not sure about the last entry. Well I am pretty sure just based on the promotional copy since it is so, well, sadly amusing: She broke with tradition by marrying outside of the elite circle of European royals at a time when no child of the English throne had wed a ...

In hindsight it seems a rather brilliant bit of work. I wonder how many other people will try the same thing. Or perhaps did but didn't succeed. In a way I'm surprised that Amazon took the bait. BD had whittled away pretty much most of any real significant pre-order discounts in the last 18 months o...
RE: O'Brien. Oh ick; this is precisely the sort of thing I loathe in historical fiction. Incest I can understand if I'm reading say, about Caligula and Claudius, or the ancient Egyptians. But Eleanor and Uncle Raymond? Or Marguerite of Anjou and her son? Oh please -- the cultural ...

Thanks to an even more excessive travel schedule the last year I might have actually read more books than days in the year. That's with helping start up a side business with a couple of friends, get within top 300 ranking in cross country skiing and having a nice little life (I manage to read and st...
But if they don't add these notes then they're attacked for inaccuracy and not knowing what they're on about. Its hardly a smoke-screen - its just saying what you say at the end - "this is fiction. I changed this, this and that."
I think you missed my point. I'm ta...

I found The Secret Eleanor to be an incredibly weak book. Very thin and not much there for a Cecelia Holland novel. Didn't help that I re-read Great Maria thanks to getting a promo re-print this year. But overall I found it was a slim no-enough-there book. Kings of the North on the other hand was ma...

I think an author should feel the obligation to be up front with what is fact and what is fiction. But if they don't feel such, there really isn't anything to do. Especially when most readers simply do not want to be burdened with facts I suspect. What I do find annoying is that many authors throw i...

I've noticed that many of the "notify me" statuses have gone with either no discount or to a 24% none "buttoned' discount. Though, from my wishlist, some of the British editions have simply gone away (from the US BD site). Right now looking at costs and I can get, even with shipping, almost every bo...

I wouldn't take a book into a wedding or a funeral with me. I'd have one out in the car though. Came in handy when a wedding I attended had a miserable cocktail 'hour' that lasted three hours while we waited for photos to be taken. Went out and put the driver's seat back, sipped a mediocre pinot noi...
