lol -- And speaking honestly, there's only so much actual realism that we could stand in a book or a film. No matter how brave and stalwart the hero, we're so indocrinated to expect good teeth that we'd all barf if Hero Harry had missing front teeth and the remaining ones were yellow stumps. Even if...

Tristan and Isolde

I had never even heard of the film Tristan and Isolde (2006) and had never heard of James Franco, Sophia Myles, or Rufus Sewell. (you can tell I don't get out much!) OMG. It's violent, romantic, wonderful. Ack. I just tried to edit and correct my misspelling in the header but couldn't figure out how...

What I'm Reading #2: Fixin Things

As I'm finishing up on "Burger's Daughter," I'm getting a good start on "Women at Gettysburg: Fixin' Things." The author, Peggy Ullman Bell, is one of the best historical novelists you probably never heard of. It's available on Amazon; I don't know where else. I think it was self published, though s...

What I'm reading: Burger's Daughter

I'm close to the end of "Burger's Daughter" by Nadine Gordimer (Penguin 1979), about South Africa under apartheid. Unlike most novels about that subject, this one is told from the perspective of the daughter of white anti-apartheid activists. Her parents spent much time in and out of prison. Her fat...

lol -- I stand corrected. Nothing good about January except babies. My son was born on January 25. I meant weather-wise and event-wise. Weather's lousy and all the holidays are over. Incidentally, 50 years ago, when he was born, we had an ice storm and wind chill of -5 ... and (any men can stop read...

Apologies. I hit Post before I intended. I did actually have a question and I plead Newbie Ignorance.

In answering "What are you reading?" do the books being read have to be historical fiction or anything we're reading?

Then you will want to vote for me for Queen of the World because my first move will be to ban January altogether. I intend to replace January with two Aprils or two Mays. I'm still pondering that decision.

There is nothing good to be said for January.

Greetings from an Old Dog who's learning new tricks

I joined here just days before my computer died (well, it was 10 years old, after all. R.I.P.). Bought a new one, and then the monitor died. So I've been computerless for about a month! I'm Ruth Sims. I'm in the US, in Illinois. We may be the worst-run state in the union, but at least we finally rec...
