Sanitized Juana

In response to MLE’s comments about “Year of Wonders” or author Gortner’s elimination of Juana-la-Loca’s religious zeal it seems to me that the most amazing part of HF has been eliminated. What’s so amazing is to discover that lots of real life events from the past are even more interesting than one...

In Paris (France, not Texas). It’s 1960. US pilot Gary Powers has just been shot down and Khrouchtchev has walked out of the Paris Peace Talks. An interesting period to be in, just before the better known ‘60s that really began in 1964 with bell-bottom pants, long hair and drugs-sex-and-rock-and-roll.

I actually live in Barcelona, so if anyone would like some travel advice, I’d be happy to assist. Here we have Gaudi, of course, but there are lots of other “modernist” architects that are lesser know but not less interesting… And fantastic beaches, especially just outside town such as Castelldefels...

sunny BCN

I haven’t had a very good day, but reading your posts I suddenly feel very fortunate. I live in Barcelona, Spain. Here it’s sun 7 out of 7 days. There’s a paradise-like beach only a 17 minute drive away, and it’s currently a pleasant 25º Celsius, which is 77º Fahrenheit….

HF or SF or HSF?

Some time ago I came across a HF writer who stated something along the lines that he’d “changed the outcome of the war, because defeat didn’t fit as well in his story” (He was talking about a real war). As I recall, he added: “After all we’re talking about historical fiction, not a history book”. I ...

HF or not HF. That is the question

Yes, quite so Madeleine! A couple of hours after posting my comment on P&P I realized that at the time it was written it would be considered “contemporary” but I thought it was interesting to let the comment stand anyway. Why? Because categories shift and change over the years. Some minor genres of ...

2 kinds of readers?

Could one make a difference between historical “Chick-Lit” and “the rest”? I say this in the sense that perhaps historical “Chick-Lit” applies to one kind of reader, and “the rest” to another category, that of course has its own sub-categories such as mentioned by MLE (Action-adventure, historical s...

Hello from BCN - bis

Gee everyone… I’m just so amazed at the number and quality of responses to my “Hello from BCN thread”. Now I don’t feel so lonely on the edge of South-European civilization here! LadyB: Thanks for informing me of how you select your reading material. It’s reassuring to meet people that read other th...
