Shildon Locomotion

Shildon in County Durham may be the the only place I've been to where there seem to be more car parking spaces in the town than people. I was there this weekend to visit Shildon Locomotion, the North East outpost of the National Railway Museum, where I'll be doing some talks and readings on Sunday 1...

'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins

I think this is generally recognized as English literature's first detective story. It certainly provides some useful patterns for others to follow, and like all great detective stories keeps the reader gripped and guessing from first till last. Well, 'the condensed writer' must have a ring to it - I noticed it, for one. Perhaps you should stick with it. Besides, we littleuns should stick together.

'Barry Lyndon' by W M Thackeray

This satire of manners is narrated by the eponymous 'hero', though only he gives himself that epithet. Barry Lyndon is possibly the most unreliable narrator in English literature, and there is a great deal of entertainment to be had in contrasting his version of characters and events with the truth ...

Thanks, Kate. I've been looking at your website. Interesting strapline: 'The condensed writer'. Are you little, or is this a comment on your work? Just wondering. :)

Tips for talks by writers

I have written quite an extensive article based on my experience of performing public talks and readings from my books, which I have called 'Ten tips for talks by writers'. It's a practical guide to the business of organizing and preparing to maximise the opportunity of book sales rather than a prim...

Oh yes, I hadn't considered how important the influence of Darwin would be for London at that time. Thanks for that.
