Goodness. If it weren't for the library, I wouldn't be able to be posting this now. I've moved to the states and have no computer as of yet. I'm also on a very tight budget, so without the library, where would my sanity be? Libraries should be a priority for any government who cares about the future...

Or, what is likelier, waterways are a convenient way to commit murder and dispose of the body. They are also good for a suicide, and if you are a sailor (and most could not swim) then you don't want to fall overboard. I believe the song with the spiked drink is Worcester City. I really like What Eli...

Kenny, for me a good accent conveys an impression of the people or place, but she hasn't done this very well. For Alexander they decided to avoid modern Greek or Macedonian accents and use ones that conveyed the idea of tough but sligtly uncouth barbairans for the Macedonians (various Celtic accents...

Thanks for that link, EC. That was good fun. I've been listening to them for long enough that I caught the references. I'm of the opinion that rather than being dated impossibly early, a late date for most ballads is likelier. The guy that wrote that lists brings up an excellent point, that these we...

[quote=""EC2""]No, Alais absolutely wouldn't. Nor would she just happen to have a sword lurking under her bed and one she could use. Nor would she have sat around on a sofa eating capsicums. Nor would folk have been drinking ale (i.e. in the south of France, surrounded by a wine lake). The mindset w...

[quote=""parthianbow""]That the Romans salted the fields around Carthage after they sacked it.(This was invented by a scholar who wanted to dramatise his account of it.) That the Ninth Legion 'disappeared' in Scotland. (It disappears from the historical record ca. AD 117, but officers who are known ...

[quote=""Chatterbox""]Volgadon, if you can possibly get to Krak des Chevaliers, do it! It's amazing, you can instantly see exactly why it was so strategic and why it was never taken back, even by Saladin -- it was ultimately abandoned by the Templars. You can probably see for 50 miles or more in any...

Unimpressed. Many are close, but they just don't ring true. The Scottish one was especially appaling, the rhythm of it is just wrong. The Italian and German are very film-ish. Her Rusian one is GHASTLY. I've taught English in Russia, So I'm not unfamiliar with how their English accents sound! None o...
