Yeah, Arthur D. Howden Smith led an adventurous life, at least early in his career. Around 1907 he spent some time in the Balkans as a journalist, travelling with the resistance movement fighting against the Ottomans. These experiences formed the basis for a book and several articles about this stru...

I've now had the pleasure of reading The Lion of Cairo and I'd echo Annis' review of it, linked above. A great read, full of action and intrigue. I think Annis covers the plot in her review (go read it!) as well as can be without giving too much away, so I won't add anything further on plot, but I w...

My wife and I were at the San Diego Comic Con two weeks ago and went to the Spartacus panel. The good news is that Andy Whitfield (Spartacus) has recovered from his cancer. So they'll be moving forward with Season 2, but first they're doing a six episode prequel focusing on the characters played by ...

Small world, Ariadne! If your dad has been going to Pulpfest (and its predecessor, Pulpcon) for awhile, then I probably know him, as I've only missed one since 1987.

At Pulpfest this past weekend, a friend of mine who's a big fan of Robert E. Howard, Harold Lamb, Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur and others in that style recommended Oden to me highly as well. I'll have to check him out pronto!

Conventions

I just got back from Pulpfest, a 3 day convention devoted to the old pulp magazines. There are a ton of science fiction/fantasy conventions every year, as well as a number devoted to mystery fiction. Are there any conventions devoted primarily or exclusively to historical fiction?

That cover is hysterical!

Beyond the celibacy issue, didn't the Church prohibit marriages between Christian crusaders and Saracen women back then, unless the woman converted (perhaps at the point of a sword)? Though marriage may be far from this guy's thoughts...

Has anyone read the new Temeraire book? I love the series and just finished the latest one. Sadly, I think she may be losing a little steam on these; this book seemed to drag a bit, and there was a lot of book for how little the plot got advanced. I still enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as the ea...

I've not read Wishart (sounds like I need to though), though I've read all the Roman mysteries by Davis and Saylor. But I echo the recommendation of John Maddox Roberts, whose books I enjoy the most of the three.
