Susan is right; Maud, the Countess of Chester died in August of 1189, and I am going to miss her very much after sharing three of my books with her. We don't know, of course, if she and Eleanor were the close friends I made them to be, but I think both women had a lot in common based on what we know of their lives. I didn't deal with Maud's death in Devil's Brood because it ends in August, and Eleanor wouldn't yet have gotten word of her death. And since I was planning to continue the story in Lionheart, I didn't mention her fate in the AN, though I probably should have. Another death that summer was the sudden death of Henry and Eleanor's daughter Matilda, Tilda in DB, the Duchess of Saxony. She was only 33 and we do not know anything about the circumstances of her death. AT least Henry was spared knowing that.

Laura, great choice! E-mail me and I'll give you information about the abbey hotel in case you want to stay there. It is surprisingly reasonable considering that Eleanor and Henry are its neighbors, but it is not open all year long, the case with many French hotels.
