A few months ago this book was previewed on a historical fiction blog. I was excited by the idea of a book about Brigid. The novel sounded very interesting. When it was available on Vine I snagged a copy quickly. I couldn't wait to read it. However, the summary I read a few months back wasn't the book I received.
There were two problems with this book. For some readers it won't bother them at all. However, for me these issues hurt the novel. First, the author did not give us a feel for the time. There were not enough historical details in this novel. Michelle Moran is the master when it comes to weaving historical detail into the story without making it sound like a dull history book. What makes a good historical fiction novel is when an author can describe the clothing, fabric, food, houses etc. because it gives the reader an understanding of the time. But none of these details were present in Brigid of Kildare. Only two historical details jumped out at me and they were Brigid practicing with a sword and her servant holding up a candle. When Brigid takes her new habit we know that it is linen and white. That's it. I would have liked more detail and a better feeling for the time. The other problem I had was the character Alex(who is from modern times). Granted she finds the book and helps to uncover Brigid's story, but I think this could have been done within the historical setting. I felt Alex's story slowed down the pace of the book. I didn't need to know Alex's story and I didn't care about it. Alex's story got in the way of a decent story. The novel could have been interesting with Brigid and Decius. The reader doesn't need Alex. We have Brigid who is sympathetic to the old ways and is a woman who coverts a lot of her people by taking on an active role within the church. She is unorthodox but is monumental in changing the hearts of her people. Then we have Decius who is sent by the Vatican to find out what Brigid is all about. Why is she so popular? And is she performing mass and acting like a priest? As I was reading this story I was trying to figure out who it would appeal to. Historical fiction readers may feel cheated by the lack of detail. Maybe those who have an interest in Ireland or Brigid may enjoy this book? I was hoping for more.

Thanks for the review--I'll probably take this off my list. I hate when the description doesn't match the book.

Glad you found the review helpful. As of right now I'm the only 2 star review. I'm sure I'll get a ton of not helpful hits, but oh well. This book isnt what I hoped it would be. Sad really.
