Hi Annis! Glad you liked the writeup - which was pounded out in a hurry on the night before leaving for another conference. I'm just back today and ready to collapse. The folks belonging to the HNS Sydney Chapter have been discussing the possibilities of an event a bit closer to your neck of the woo...

If you like good historical ghost stories, I finished one recently that was excellent and very spooky - Simone St. James's An Inquiry Into Love and Death . It was published last week. I was at home by myself reading it one afternoon when the screen door flew open in the wind and then banged shut. I ...

[quote=""Margaret""]Um, yes, a dozen times would seem a bit too often to repeat any one expression in one novel. I encountered an expression three times in one novel once, and resolved never to read the author again (this wasn't the only failing, though). The main character exploded out of his chair...

Sounds about right. I remember it was dark brown rather than black.

This is the cover of my copy of The Turquoise, which I rather like.

OTOH, this one is whoa, scary.

That's the edition of Winthrop Woman that I first read and still own. It's really not bad compared to some of the others.

[quote=""Ludmilla""]Even the ones who are genuinely doing it for the love of books without financial motivations are often so caught up in group rivalries to be a "top reviewer" or be the first to review a book, or other competitive forces, I think they lose sight of the books they are reviewing. Th...

I'm doing both HNS and ALA this year. It'll be crazy since they're so close together, but ALA is within driving distance for me.

I haven't seen a deadline listed for HNS.

I really like the way you've phrased it too, Annis. It's a tone I don't often see in historical novels, mysteries or otherwise, and it made for a very pleasurable read.

[quote=""fljustice""]Someone else sharing my perception on the uptick of early 20th C stories! I have a theory that early 20C's popularity is related to the 100 anniversary phenom. 100 years is such a nice round number and people have a penchant for looking back with a feeling of distance, yet famil...

Thanks for reposting the breakdown, EC2! The Tudor era has had some high-profile and bestselling novels of late, but in looking at the overall picture and the number of titles published, it doesn't dominate and really never has. And of the 9 titles reviewed this month that were set in the 16th c, th...
