The last movie I saw at the cinema was Wall-E. I thought it was adorable. And I truly believe that only Disney could make a cockroach as endearing as Hal.

Does anyone else enjoy the Reel History series currently running in The Guardian (British newspaper)? Link here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/series/reelhistory. Entertaining look at the history - if any - behind various Hollywood films.

These Greek llamas should make someone on this site very happy, and it also reminded me of the wonderful credits of "Holy Grail." Speak of historical fiction...

i actually saw brideshead revisited

it and had no idea it was based on a novel
or that there was a mini-series made in
the 1980's.

You have to see the series. It was excellent and had a wonderful cast including Jeremy Irons as Charles.

haha! apparently, the mini-series was
not such a hit for a 12 year old boy?

i still can't decide if i find her or

Funnily enough my mum borrowed the DVD from the library the other day, she loved it the first time round and subsequent repeats on English TV! She said it was just as good the other day as it was then!

Personally, I got fed up with the hype as I was too young to appreciate it then, might try it again soon!

I remember watching Brideshead Revisited[i/] waaay back in the 70's with Anthony Andrews and Jeremy Irons. Quite a miniseries -- and I recently picked up the novel, but haven't read it yet. I confess to being a fan of Emma Thompson, I'll watch nearly anything that she is in.

Watched [i]Love in the Time of Cholera this week on dvd. Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous and a very heartbreaking story as well. Review is posted here: http://www.epinions.com/review/Love_in_the_Time_of_Cholera_Mike_Newell_3/content_442397920900 if anyone is interested.

Yes, the Brideshead Revisited series was on PBS in the USA in early 1982.

I love the extended versions of the LOTR films, think they are better than the cinema versions although it's good to be able to take a break, especially during the 3rd one!

I've got 3.10 to Yuma on tape, Bale and Crowe are always worth watching and I'm sure will look good as cowboys!

I also finally got round to watching "Elizabeth" (with Cate Blanchett) the other day , it's one of those films I've always missed when it's been on TV, anyway finally taped it and have now seen it, thought it was good (CB is excellent) but a bit arty with some of the shots (all those overhead shots were a bit dizzying!) and of course it's not totally accurate historically either, but well made and acted.

"Coco Chanel", interesting movie, interesting woman. Starring Shirley MacLaine as an older Chanel. Audrey Hepburn told Shirley around 40 years that she should play Coco someday. Shirley said, "She was a little scrunched over and very short." and Audrey replied "But the spirit of the woman is what matches your spirit."

I watched Silk last night because of the silk worm smuggling from Japan in 1865 plotline. It sounded like an interesting period adventure story. Not! It was so drawn out and boring. The lead characters were French silk mill investors and had American accents. Even Keira Knightly had a Yank accent instead of a natural Brit one! Awful.

The filming locations used in Italy (not France!) and Japan were beautiful though, so I kept watching this dull drama to the end.

It was based on the novel of the same name by Alessandro Baricco. Has anyone read it?

For me it was having to listen to Yiddish being spoken with that deep in dixie southern accent that was so grating. Not to mention the lousy plot and general meaness of the film. I actually like satire, but this was cruelty.

"The Fall" a very surreal movie, beautiful to look at. The actor from "Pushing Daisies" is in it (Lee Pace) and he's much sexier than he is on "PD". There's a very young Romanian actress in it who is just adorable! She was 9 or so when she shot the movie and her character is 5. She didn't know English and had to learn the lines by heart.

We were watching La Vie en Rose yesterday afternoon (it's a lazy weekend here). Very harrowing and beautifully told although the contstant jumps back and forth in her life were at times a bit confusing. You didn't really know immediately when certain events occurred and had to remain focused throughout. But it was worth it, including some excellent acting and make-up. Not sure if I'd watch it again, though. But what a sad life really. Bless.

I haven't seen Leatherheads yet, but parts of it were filmed about 10 miles from my house and then other parts were filmed in the upstate SC area. Lots of folks practically camped out when Clooney was in Anderson so they could get a chance to meet him. I'll make sure I watch it as soon as it's on a movie channel.

I went to see Clooney, Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt in the Cohen brothers' Burn After Reading. It was a quirky and violent movie with some really funny moments. Clooney and Pitt were such clowns! Lots of satire and occasional pathos thread in and out of its patchwork plotline.

I've been wondering how this one would turn out. I wasn't impressed with the trailer and Bill Murray seemed wrong for that role. I read the book a few years ago, and enjoyed it. Something about subterranean cities just captures the imagination, doesn't it?

We finally saw Iron Man, which was fun.

Watched (most of) Queen Margot on DVD last night, about Catherine de Medici's daughter who married Henri de Navarre. It's 2.5 hours and French subtitled so I succumbed to sleep although I found it beautiful and riveting. This isn't my time period so I don't know how historically accurate it is. Oh I love this film, it's so gorgeous looking and as you say, sumptuous - it opens out the stage show quite a bit so that it works as a movie, and not just a case of filming a performance of the musical - lovely!:D A wallow with a box of chocolates film if ever there was one - and Gerard Butler is great as the Phantom!

I saw that in the original CW, and I enjoyed it. Particularly liked Chiaran Hinds as Brian de Boise Gilbert. When it appeared on UK TV, Angela Levin of the Daily Mail enthused about it, saying 'Forget Mr Darcy's wet shirt, it's much more fun to lust after a man in chain mail.' I've made a lot of mileage out of that one!
My re-enactment society Regia Anglorum provided some of the extras and turned up to filming with their authentic costumes. The BBC immediately took them away and replaced them with their own version of what peasants wore. Regia members were not happy bunnies.

That's probably the best way to approach this version of WH! I agree with Christina that JB's French accent (lovely as it is) isn't really right for a Yorkshire lass, but it does stick closely to the book which most of the other movie versions don't (eg the one with Timothy Dalton which had Heathcliff being shot dead by Edgar) - there certainly have been some strange versions of this book!:p

My young man got me The 13th Warrior, mainly because it stars Antonio Banderas. I was a bit iffy about watching it at first, thinking it would be fairly violent - which it was, but I was charmed from the moment Omar Sharif appeared as the hero's uncle. In years gone by, he would have been playing the hero's part. It was a nice touch, I thought, to name the hero Ahmed ibn Fadlan - which was the name of the real Arabic traveller who wrote about living among the Rus/Vikings and who described a Viking ship funeral. There was also a touch of Beowulf about it, as the band of warriors journey to a distant hall to fight trolls and end up confronting a Mother Goddess/priestess type in a deep cave. That scene was very reminiscent of old B movies where Our Heros have to creep past the Savage Tribesmen in some ancient temple or other - and I love that sort of old movie.
Antonio Banderas was very good, and it was all great fun. I liked the way the Viking King described writing as "drawing sounds", and the way Ahmed learnt the Norse language - and they really were speaking Greek and Norse and Latin in the early scenes, with the Arab characters speaking English to each other.
Recommended, if you don't mind some violent scenes.

I liked 300 - but as the adaptation of a comic, rather than a historical movie. After all, the Spartan hoplites would have been wearing full armour in reality. The director, I think it was, said he wanted to get the look of the Ancient Greek vases, where they were portrayed wearing little more than a cloak and a helmet.
I think it actually got the basic story across very well.
And Gerard Butler's accent didn't bother me - after all, none of the actors were Greek, and the Greeks do (and did) have regional accents. It was rather like an adaptation of the Gospels that was done a few years ago, where all the disciples had Scottish accents, and the people from Jerusalem had posh English accents - because it does say that the Galileans had a regional accent, and obviously no-one was speaking Aramaic in the production.

3.10 to Yuma - the recent remake. Thought it was a little bit slow, but nice to see a movie that took its time to develop the characters, and Messrs Crowe and Bale were very cool.

Also had some pure popcorn the other day in the shape of the first Lara Croft movie - I'd never seen it and heard how bad it was...anyway it was Ok, very daft and fell apart a bit at the end - I always think it's a cop-out when they start to turn back time so that they can bring back characters who've been killed off - but it's a harmless enough popcorn movie, I thought Angelina was pretty good, and any film that has Daniel Craig in the shower cant' be all bad!

my local PBS station has what they call Cinema 13 on Saturday nights, where they show classic film, uncut and without breaks. Last night's offering was Lifeboat, an old Alfred Hitchcock fim. It was much better than I thought it would be.

Is it as frenetic as Madagascar? I wanted to strangle those animals - LOL!

Just re-watched Queen of the Damned. It is truly scary how much Stuart Townsend looks like Kiera Knightley. Thank goodness he didn't stay as Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, for which part he was originally cast!

I think ST is prettier than KK! I can't imagine why they cast him as the original Aragorn though, he's way too young. Thank goodness they saw sense in time to recast!

I loved The Thornbirds, both the book and the series. I always thought it was a pity about Richard Chamberlain, a waste of a handsome man for us ladies! He made a brilliant Ralph de Bricassart (sp?).

.....and I could end up being villified by all of you as this film has grossed millions and taken both sides of the Pond by storm.

And I Hated IT!!!!!!

So did my husband and daughter, all three of us sat in the cinema with our faces hidden murmuring, 'No, no, please don't sing, please don't sing'

Yup you got it -it was Mama Mia!

I used to think Pearce Brosnan and Colin Firth were sexy - now that fantasy is completely gone - I threw away my BBC Version DVD of Pride and Prejudice and now I have to rely on the anorexic grinning pixie Kiera Knightly/Matthew McFadden version.

Does anyone feel the same about Mama Mia [not necesssarily Keira-but if you do we are soulmates] , or are I and my family really alien invaders with a spaceship buried under our house in readiness for when we are summoned back to our home planet - which is why we don't get it????:mad::mad:

I've got it on my rental list. I'll let you know in the fullness of time as it's not in my top picks but on my holding list at the moment. I pay so much a month and the films are posted out and I get a new one every time I return one. Next up is Spider Man III. Prince Caspian, No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and The Colour of Magic are my next top pics. Mama Mia is quite a way down the list but it's on it - so I'll report back in a couple of months :)!

I thought it was alot of fun for what it is!

Pierce Brosnan can't sing for peanuts though - badly miscast for a role that needed someone who could, but other than that...thought it was good!

I think I am probably getting a copy of it on DVD for Christmas from my son I think.

I loved Mamma Mia but.... the first 20 mins or so are pretty bad - when all the female friends start to arrive, there's lots of shrieking and screeching and whooping - ugh! It gets better when the men arrive though! I agree that PB is a terrible singer but I think some people perhaps take it a bit too seriously - it's a feelgood movie really and doesn't pretend to be anything else. And of course it helps if you like Abba!

Re P & P - I agree entirely about KK being an anorexic grinning pixie - perfect description and the film has far too many close-ups of her...MM does look quite good though especially in the scene when he appears out of the mist but that's about it. I've been to Chatsworth House which "played" Pemberley" in the film and it's a fabulous place, but unfortunately instead of the house all we got was KK's wide-eyed looks. One of the papers here gave away the Firth DVD for free - hooray!

I saw it yesterday and didn't think it was too long. And definitely not boring. I was impressed by the serious social aspects of including the stolen generations issue in the storyline, and then loved the comedic aspects of the 'fish out of water' antics of Kidman's role as an aristo in the wild. She and Jackman were great together when exchanging witty barbs. It was quite a saga with fun, tragedy, triumph, sacrifice, power hungry villian cattle kings, dreamtime magic, and romance. Yay for Baz.

Just re-watched "Lion in Winter." I've been sick with a cold all week, did a bit of school work today, and then lost all my energy, so I plopped on the coach and decided to watch a movie. I had never noticed what beautiful blue eyes all the actors in the film have.
