Yes, I'm creating a new thread about this sorry excuse for a movie as part of my campaign to get as many intelligent people I know to not go see it.

I went last Thursday night to see it as a sneak preview, so I didn't pay a dime to view this horrible movie. I think the best part of the movie was the scenery. I always enjoy seeing historical sites brought to life since I cannot see them for myself. It was amazing to see The Globe brought to life and I found myself sitting there wishing that someone would build a theatre like The Globe.

But no. If you're thinking about spending any amount of your hard earned money on this movie, don't. Just... don't. You will come away more offended than anything else and I don't just mean the obvious plot twist they concocted.

You don't surprise me. I listened to the director talking about it and feared the worst. It's a shame really because I do think Rhys Ifan is a good actor -- well he did an excellent job as Peter Cook and that really can't have been easy.

If it's any consolation Rowan, I haven't read any decent reviews of it. Perhaps the director should stick to destroying the world in various ways although I just read today that apparently a sequel to Indepedence Day (one of his although I don't know if he's linked to the new one) might be on the cards.....

I looked on Yahoo to see what reviews people were giving it and the 3-4 I saw were glowing reviews about the best movie ever made that tells the truth. I gave the story an F but the scenery/cinematography an A+.

They made Shakespeare a whiny git. Of course that's also the actor's interpretation of what he thinks Shakespeare was like.

They gave Elizabeth I three sons, one of whom was the Earl of Essex who wanted to overthrow her in her old age and sit on the throne himself. The other is revealed to be the Earl of Oxford himself - with whom she had one of her sons. So Elizabeth committed incest in addition to having three sons.

Did I mention Shakespeare as a whiny git? :p

I won't be even renting that one. You can't play with history that much without annoying the history crowd.

I'm almost laughing at Elizabeth I having three sons. I could see maybe hiding one pregnancy, but three?

I spotted a trailer for it and wasn't impressed:rolleyes: for some reason I have never been overly fond of Vanessa Redgrave and feel she over-acts her parts. But having read the thread...Elizabeth I having 3 sons:eek: how thorougly stupid! It is also disappointing in that I love period drama but it has to make sense!

I don't intend seeing it. Thanks SM for the heads up:)

You know, they might have unintentionally made a comedy. It might be fun to watch it just to howl with laughter.

Well if it was intended to be a comedy, no one at the theatre last Thursday night got the joke. So either we're all stupid, or not.

Agreed, the building is wonderful but I have to attend a play there accompanied by several pain-killers. The seats (I know I should be so lucky as to have a seat) is very very hard on the back and the posterior and the first half is really really really long with a very short second half. At least all the performance I have been to have been like that. I leave with severe cramp, and a pain in the b** like nothing I have ever had before.

Although it was very interesting seeing an all-male performance of Twelve Night. You get a humour that just doesn't come over if the female parts are played by -- females.

Still don't fancy it but then again I didn't like 'Shakespeare in Love' and am still bemused as to how or why Gwyneth won the Oscar:confused:

Another QEI movie I liked was 'Elizabeth' but I didn't like the follow up 'The Golden Age(I think?)...But I loved the TV versions of Helen Mirren as Elizabeth and another one with er...ummmm....*scratches head*...er....AnneMarie somebody?

Its going to be like Amadeus - the type of movie that everyone assumes is all history, when its nothing but speculation (that being said, I loved that movie!) Its a shame that people get their history lessons from tv and movies - they so often get a mixed bag or worse of what really happens. I wish folks would just take what they see as entertainment and story telling, then go do some searching to find out more of the real stuff.

I loved Shakespear in Love, its still one of my favorite movies. Seems every time I watch it I catch another theatre reference. Whether Paltrow deserved the Oscar is not a big concern of mine. I just thought she was wonderful (as was Judy Dench)

I don't like Shakespear so I could careless if he wrote the books or not. Or plays or whateve ryou want to call them.

Its funny that people get all upset about this type of historical inaccuracy(if it is one) but yet they are perfectly fine with others in movies.

Where is the outcry then? Either be consistent or shut it.

I've been there several times and it is amazing! Thankfully it is indoors, but otherwise it is an exact replica of the one in England (I've seen both!)

I enjoyed Shakespeare in Love but was also a bit bemused at GP's Oscar. I also enjoyed Elizabeth but was bored stiff by The Golden Age - all that build up to the Spanish Armada and then it all seemed to be over in about 5 minutes!

I thought the TV drama with Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons was superb, they were fab together. I didn't see the other series though, I think that focussed more on her early life.

I know; I suspect its when a certain theme pushes someone's button. I am not as much concerned about what happens in Amadeus because I don't know the history, I just know I love the music. But don't get me started on Braveheart....
Again, its just a shame people get their history from entertainment. If they were taught history, they might at least see the change as an interesting take on the facts, rather than the facts themselves. But so many people have no idea, and just absorb it all as real.

Divia--"I don't like Shakespear so I could careless if he wrote the books or not.."
I remember having to study Shakespeare at school and I absolutely hated it! I have not read another Shakespeare since then and don't intend too! Hurrah! Finally someone else doesn't like him lol.:p

Madeleine--I thought the TV drama with Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons was superb, they were fab together..."

I agree but then again Helen is such a brilliant actor as is Jeremy Irons and they simply clicked together...There was great chemistry between them.

I have also heard that America is making its own version of Prime Suspect, I doubt anyone can do better than Mirren as Jane Tennison.

I agree with you (and Divia) on the Shakespeare, and with you on the Mirren/Irons double act - the chemistry was great and I'd love to see them work together again, they were very believable. And I also agree about HM in Prime Suspect; the only one who might be able to pull off that role might be Glenn Close, I loved her in Damages.

I would tend to agree about Glen Close but could she do the vulnerable as well as the strong JT. Probably/possibly.

Oh I loved 'Damages' wasn't it a brilliant series? There were so many twists and turns that you really didn't figure out the ending until the end and Glenn Close was maginficent. I also agree that she could play Tennison but unfortunately it has gone to another actress. It wont have the same gritty atmosphere of the original..I probably wont watch it.

LoveHistory--yes it is Anne-Marie Duff...I am a terror with names..I think she is married to James McAvoy...lucky lady.:D

Just hopped over to imdb to see who they cast - Maria Bello. I remember her from ER and a couple of movies; she's not a bad actress IIRC but a bit different from HM - long blonde hair and the pose on the publicity still isn't quite the same! Still it sounds as if it's worth a look, nice to see Aidan Quinn there too.

Just read that the US version of Prime Suspect, despite being generally well-received, has been pulled before finishing it's 13-episode run. Oh well.

As regards film vs book, I know someone who doesn't see the point of reading a book if there's a film version of the book available.
