Lila, SM, I love this thread though because I'm always interested in what folks around the world are eating. Weetabix for e.g. like Diamondlil had for breakfast are certainly indigenous to the UK and Australia at least! Don't know about the rest of the world.

We have Weetabix here although it's not too common. I grew up eating it as my Mom always said it was healthier than shredded wheat.

I love this thread too as I like discovering new foods from different parts of the world. This year I'm going to make an English Christmas Pudding. There's a great recipe in my Nigella Feast's book!

Today's dinner was italian take away from a local restaurant, veal parm with a marinara sauce and linguini. To be honest, I wasn't impressed at all.

When I was in NZ, I found out about some things I didn't know about. Lamburger is really, really good. I am addicted to Tim-Tam cookies (and you can't get them here in the US! Wahhh!) And they are very serious about their chocolate.

I love shortbread -- I've found one of the best recipes -ever- for it, and it goes together in less than twenty minutes and ready to be baked within an hour. I've done variations with it with nuts, various spices and flavourings -- lemon does really well.

As you can see, food is a dangerous subject with me...

Ahhh! Well! Its like this.....you have not got such a pedantic father in law as I have!

Actually, when they came over for holidays before we all moved here they had some left over (they travelled around in a hired camper van), and tey brought them back and for some unknown reason gave them to us. We had a box of Weetabix and compared them! FIL then said that is why the normal two left him hungry!

As for the cornflakes, you are so right!

Vanessa

Well, I didn't have Weetabix this morning, I had Oatibix! In fact, I'm wading through all the cereals which we seem to have accumuated that no-one else likes. I'm not in the least bit faddy over my food.

What's different about Cornflakes? Which brand are they?

Alaric
09-18-2008, 11:48 AM
Are cornflakes sold in the UK under Kelloggs? I don't remember. Either way, we mainly get the Kelloggs brand here so if that isn't the brand sold in the UK then that could be it.

Vanessa
09-18-2008, 12:11 PM
It's Kellogs in the UK, too, unless you choose an 'own brand' make. How strange that they should taste different, then! Weetabix is Weetabix and Shredded Wheat is Nestle, I think.

Since we're all talking about food here, and we're all bookish sorts, does anyone have any favourite cookbooks?

For some reason, most of my cookbooks are categorized as "diet" since that's how most healthy cookbooks are labeled. My all time favorite is this obscure diet cookbook I got from a mail advertisement years ago. It's called Losing Weight The Smart Low Carb Way, long name, and not really "diet", IMO, but the recipes are soo great! It's not low carb but uses whole grains and low GI recipe's. Basically, just good healthy common sense foods. Every single recipe I've made from it has been delicious.

My favorite is the Cauliflower Lentil Soup recipe. Heaven in a bowl!! Also the Raspberry Chocolate Tart is delish as is the Stuffed Eggplant, Moussaka, Baked Eggs w/ Zucchini...I could go on and on! It's the most used cookbook in my kitchen! Love it!!

Apparantly it's on Amazon too! (http://www.amazon.com/Lose-Weight-Smart-Low-Carb-Way/dp/157954438X)

Chuck - look for Quaker Instant Grits http://www.quakergrits.com/ in your area. I either buy Quaker or the generic brand from Bi-Lo grocery store. I don't put as much water as recommended because I like them thicker and less watery. You'll want to experiment a bit perhaps.

And I have read a couple of Sharyn McCrumb's novels. Very good - and love the mystical elements. I keep meaning to read more, so thanks for the reminder! I love living at the foot of the southern Appalachians these last 3.5 years and will probably never go back to live in the SC Lowcountry now. Of course, the Lowcountry restaurants serve up some awesome shrimp and grits. And I really miss the oyster roasts.

Vanessa, corn grits are different from the more well known oat based porridge. From Wiki -Grits is an American Indian corn-based food common in the Southern United States, consisting of coarsely ground corn. It is traditionally served during breakfast.

I also love Quaker instant oatmeals with all the flavorings available. My favorites always include anything with cinnamon, raisins, brown sugar, walnuts or apple.

Thanks, Leyland. You learn something new every day!:) I'm sure I've seen a recipe in a book I've read for grits - probably Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe by Fannie Flagg? Eggbeaters are an egg substitute here in the US. It's really a brand name but they're so entrenched here and they're used like the word "Kleenex" is used for any sort of tissue paper. Without thinking I used the brand name but really I buy the Costco (a warehouse bulk buying store here) brand because they're just as good and a little cheaper. But without even thinking I described them as "eggbeaters", a different brand! Funny how we think like that!

Anyway, here they are. Do you have a similar product over there? http://www.eggbeaters.com/index.jsp

We have nothing like eggbeaters here in the UK - I think wartime memories of dried eggs are still perhaps too entrenched. The original eaters of such might be now shuffling off the mortal coil but they've passed on the lore to their children and their children's children so at the moment egg products like that are relegated to extreme camping supply shops.

It's a while since I've had muffins for breakfast. Actually I quite fancy buttered crumpets!

We have scones here. I love scones. They're probably my favorite bakery item of all!! I haven't quite perfected making a healthy low fat whole grain scone though. And I can't bring myself to make the delicious white flour butter filled ones I buy at the coffee shop or bakery!!

Hot cross buns aren't really common here. We do eat jam on toast or busciuts but what is clotted cream? I've heard of it but never tried it. Honestly it sounds kind of gross :o ! I don't think you could even buy something like there here in US. Maybe in a specialty store!!

Clotted Cream is delicoius! I had it when I went to London both times.

A thick cream made primarily in England by heating milk until a layer of cream forms on its surface that is then cooled and skimmed off. Also called Devonshire Clotted Cream.

Clotted cream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clotted_cream). It is actually delicious as SonjaMarie says although it sounds rather bizarre. Probably not best to eat too much of it, though! It originates from Devon/Cornwall way who are well known for their Cream Teas!

Do you not have any Sonic Drive-Ins in your area? I rarely go now as much as I did in high school and college. I loved Sonic's Coneys (hotdogs with chili and cheese) and the corn dogs, too. I don't know if the carhops are still on rollerskates or not though. Maybe I should get the work lunch group out to Sonic one day soon instead of our usual Mexican or Greek.

There aren't many drive-ins left, but it is cheaper to go there than it is to go to the cinema.

Yes, they are still Shepherd's pie in the UK or Cottage Pie.
As I recall, Shepherd's pie was officially supposed to be minced lamb and cottage pie was minced beef, but that's largely been forgotten now. They both describe the meat and mashed potato topping dish.
A mince pie would be a pie made with mincemeat (moist spicy dried fruit mixture)
A Scotch pie would be the kind Carine describes I think with mince and pastry. They tend to be a product from Scotland (obviously!) and available in the more northerly counties of England. We don't have them in Notts except for in some of the major supermarkets.

Interesting, EC2! My Mom lived in England as a child so her cooking when I was a child was highly influenced by her time there. Sometimes I'm never sure if I'm calling a dish by it's American name or it's Brittish name. She makes Shepherd's Pie with 1/2 lamb 1/2 beef so I always thought that was the proper way to make it. I didn't know about Cottage Pie. That's why I love this thread. It has such interesting tidbits of international food trivia :D !

I agree; it is a great thread isn't it. I love learning about each other's culture.:D
The Shepherd's and Cottage names are totally interchangeable these days and nearly every Brit will know what you mean if you refer to either. We eat it about once every four weeks. Not that I'm into a strict regime but mince is a once a week staple and it'll go over a month something like, meatballs, bolognese, shepherd's pie, chilli, then back to meatballs and repeat with the occasional variation.

Now Chili is an American dish, right? Are there any other American dishes that Europeans eat on a regular basis?

It's kind of sold as Mexican in the UK.
There are a lot of American snack dishes and fast food - Tortilla chips, hamburgers (but called beefburgers). All the commercial junk food stuff. American breakfast muffins (like giant fairy cakes?) have made their way over to the UK. New York Cheesecake (so called). That appears in quite a few recipe books. Hot dogs! Fried chicken. These days the UK seems uneasy with its own cuisine. The older generation still love their tradtional meat and two vegetables kind of dishes but pasta and rice, Indian, Chinese and Italian dishes are just as likely to appear on the dinner table - but adapted for UK tastes. Chicken Tikka, Sweet and sour chicken, (both out of jars) pizza or spaghetti bolognse. Younger son and his student nurse girlfriend are eating lasagne tonight. We're out at the gym but will come home to poached eggs on toast.
I can't think of anything American I cook other than chilli, but there are a lot of American influences in commercial foods. Occasionally the cookery mags (aimed at the middle classes) will do an American feature, especially around Thanksgiving and Halloween.

Carine
10-15-2008, 05:19 PM
I can't really think of anything specific that I cook that is an American dish, but as EC says there are American influences in commercial foods here in Belgium too.

Yes, meatloaf is a popular dish here too. It's a classic comfort food. I'm looking forward to the cooler weather so I can cook some nice stews and soups. There's nothing better than a big bowl of soup with hot buttered bread. Mmmm!!

BTW, a tip: when you cook chili, instead of regular canned tomatoes substitute one can of roasted tomatoes. It makes a huge difference in the flavor! I happily came across this by accident last year when I ran out of crushed tomatoes. Yummy!!

Leyland

The older generation still love their tradtional meat and two vegetables kind of dishes

There are many home-cooking style restaurants in my region that only serve meat and several choices of vegetables, along with a bread biscuit or a dinner roll. Sweetened iced tea, soda or water is the usual beverage. The outside signs advertise lunch as "Meat & three w/tea for $4.95" or a similar price. The price gets the buyer their choice of one meat serving (chix, beef, or pork) and a choice of three different servings of veggies.

I can't think of anything American I cook other than chilli, but there are a lot of American influences in commercial foods.

I love the basic beef chili made with red kidney and black beans, and with yellow corn added with the tomato, too. Plenty of cumin and chili powder and I'm done! I've got a little recipe book for chili and other stews, but there are so many other ingredients required, that I just going back to the basic one I love. Grilled cheese sandwiches with chili on a cold day just can't be beat.

Speaking about unusual breakfasts reminds me of one of the breakfasts that we had when I was touring Europe.

Hmm...goulash for breakfast! Not sure if I could do that. Although from what I understand sweets of any kind for breakfast, even cereal, is a very Western thing. Italian wedding soup sounds interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_soup

The name of it is a mistranslation of the Italian language, minestra maritata, which is a reference to the fact that green vegetables and meats go well together.

It tastes really good.
