Does anyone know of a good picture book showing the fashion in the "old days"? Not sure what century I'm actually after but perhaps 1500?

Not a book and not 1500 but I find this site very interesting: http://historicenterprises.com/

I do own a book about Spanish clothing in 1170-1340 but the style is quite different from the rest of Europe so I guess you have to have an specific interest. Vestiduras Ricas (http://www.amazon.com/Vestiduras-ricas-monasterio-Huelgas-1170-1340/dp/8471203839)

This is the link to the Planche History of British Costume (should be an acute accent on the e) at the Internet Archive. This British costume only but it is the one used by Georgette Heyer:

http://www.archive.org/details/britishcostumeco00planuoft

A search of this archive reveals more than just this one.

The ones that I actually own are:

What People Wore when - Melissa Leventon (ancient to 19th century - world costumes)
English Costume form the Seventh through Nineteenth Century (sorry rather later than you are interested in)
A Concise History of Costume - James Laver (315 colour plates)

But the ones that were rather more useful, I borrowed from the library because the contained large colour plates of paintings from the appropriate times. I can't remember any particular title but the Dewey classmark is about and around 791.4363

Dover Publications have a lot of books on costume and a advanced search of Amazon under publisher should reveal quite a few -- they are not expensive and do offer rather more specialisation on country and age than any other publisher I can think of.

I hope this helps.

I have an inexpensive coloring book, Spanish and Moorish Fashions (http://www.amazon.com/Spanish-Moorish-Fashions-Tom-Tierney/dp/0486426521/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301169980&sr=1-1) that covers from medieval through 1700's.
taken from portraits, for the most part.

The author, Tom Tierney, seems to have a whole series of coloring books and paper doll books on everything from modern movie star outfits to Byzantine and ancient Greek clothing.

Why on earth didn't I think of coloring books for research?! Brilliant.
