Does anyone know what methods were employed in the 17th century to make wood tar?

Some time ago i read Josephine Humphreys' novel "Nowhere Else on Earth", set in Robeson County, North Carolina in the Civil War period. One thing which was interesting was the thriving industry producing turpentine and pine-tar (http://www.maritime.org/conf/conf-kaye-tar.htm)
