I have to go to a Urologist in Seattle and the times between waiting for buses and ferries and in between times are long and it's going to be a long annoying day. I also found out I may have to pay at least %20 of the cost of my appointment, we'll see, sigh!

Sorry to hear about the transportation and expense woes, but hope the visit brings solutions to problems. Honestly, your day around the city sounds worse than dealing with airports.

And since I live in the Seattle area, I know the biggest pitfall.. if your ferry is late coming back to Vashon, you will miss the bus.. and the next one is in two hours.

Well it didn't go so bad with wait times as I thought it would!
We got downtown, found the 12 to Swedish fast, waited in the doctor's office for a bit, had my apt, went to Subway, had sandwiches while waited for the 12, went to Walgreens to catch the 54 to the ferry dock, the 3:05 was already in, we made it down the dock on time, and when we were on the other side the 119 that actually goes directly to where I live was there, so we just cancelled the Access Van ride we had for nearly an hour and more after we arrived. It was nice to get home at a decent time!
Nice to have another Washingtonian on the forum, we have a few here.

I just found out today that because Leanda De Lisle has a book coming out on Jane and her sister's and Eric Ives is planning on one about Jane, that a friend of mine's publisher has cancelled the publication of his book on Jane and he is giving up on it! I've been waiting years for this book to be put out and we get so close and this happens, it's not fair!

Went to the dentist today.
enough said.
Me again. There is a bad cough going round. We have all had it, some of us more than once. I have it again. My throat is sore, my chest aches from coughing, and it is making my head ache. I am opening windows at home to try and blow it through, but so far it is not working. We have had it in the house for nearly a month.
I am now coughing so much I am only just stopping mysellf from vomiting. Not good when out.

My son has come home from school with a headache, temperature. I just hope that he isn't coming down with the dreaded lurgy again. It is looking like my plans to go out are going to be thwarted again (third time in a row).

Came home from work and someone weed whacked my wall of plants and wildflowers in the front yard. Obviously intentional as it was a minimum of four feet tall, and one plant had a stem 2 inches in diameter. I am sooooooo pizzed!!!!!!!

Went to do my 2 miles at the gym. Been back there for a week now. But at half a mile I had to stop, my chest was tight and I knew my lupus was playing up. Cursed the entire way back to the house, until my Sam told me I can't be upset about it.
Being upset about something I live with on a daily basis is a waste of time, still...

I have a similar situation. It is also my last day of vacation and I am going back to school tomorrow, but the kids don't come until Wednesday and I am also working with a new grade that I am not crazy about. I had taught 6th grade language arts literacy and now I am teaching 8th grade language arts literacy. 6th graders and 8th graders are quite different animals, so I am a bit nervous. Good news (which I'll put here) is that after working in a school built in the 1920s with no air conditioning and no parking, I am going to a brand new school with air conditioning and an underground parking garage!

Oh middle schoolers. They are a different breed, arent they? At least your jump wasnt as shocking as mine. High school librarian down to an elementary librarian. That's a huge age gap. And considering I dont know kids, never wanted them, and never wanted to teach them this is going to be difficult.

That is a big jump and you will have to deal with totally different needs. My district (which is a large urban district) has done away with middle schools and made all the elementary schools PreK-8 or K-8, so I am going from a middle school with 6-8 to a PreK-8 school. At least there will be far fewer middle schoolers, so hopefully things will be a bit calmer.

Earlier one of our library volunteers in another division expressed frustration about not finding a job for a long time. Because the volunteer is blind, it's more difficult. We hear a lot about people who can't get jobs but not so much about those with physical disabilites.

The American political commercials AND Canadian political commercials at the same time! Like we really need an election after watching the stupid American politics for months and months! Not that politics are not important, but my GOD! And they are so stupid... I just watched a commercial where Harper talks about how being a father is the most important thing he has ever done... Lots of people are parents, doesn't mean they can run a country! Ahem, carry on!
Oh, good, another one. I will one day understand what those random blurbs mean about running a country... They are just scripted stuff.... I think politicians think their country-folk are stupid...
I'm at work, I have little else to do!
Dang! A small quake just hit (the newsflash says it's 4.0, about 5 miles from me). Which as a Californian born and bred, I'm used to. But it caused a power flicker, and I lost my unsaved word file. I was working on a very awkward letter of recommendation to a zoo (of all things) for someone who once worked with our llamas. Pits, I'm going to have to think that all up again.
Wow, I'm not normally a complainer, but I seem to be having a run this week ---
Just got an email from the dh, stuck in Heathrow airport due to a busted plane. According to him, they are sending him home via South America and the North Pole with four stops if he is lucky, and can I drive to an airport two hours away and pick him up in the wee hours of the morning if he catches this flight?
Great. It's not like I got a lot of rest last night.
Maybe I'm glad I didn't get to go with him to Edinburgh. Wait till he sees what the dog did to the office and finds out about the impending births.

We're in for stormy weather. We are supposed to get the last of Gustav today and then Hannah is supposed to hit us tomorrow. We don't have a lot of hurricanes, they are usually tropical storms when they hit us, but it normally means no power! Hurricane Juan was our last really bad storm (well, we have blizzards, but you know what I mean) and it left a lot of damage in its wake. Not as bad as some places, but we are not 'supposed' to have weather of that nature, so it is never fun!
Mind you, we are supposed to be having Gustav right now and so far nothing has happened... Just a bit of wind.

Marg, go into the pharmacy and in the health pill section look for Throat Clear. They are pastiles, come in honey and lemon or origonal flavour. They are all natural ingredients and work! They have an antibacterial agent in them.

Oh good. Here the doctors are very reluctant to prescribe antibiotics for a sore throat unless it has hung around for ages. But if you get them, they do the trick pretty quickly.

Its time to make the costumes for the childrens dance production. I will be making 3 outfits for Bex, and 1 for Nathan. Nathans is the simplest of all. I mucked it up. It is a vest top in lycra. My son has a bit of a tum. Lycra in not forgiving to it and needs to me to be bigger. Not enough material left to do another one.
**** and *****! (insert expletives of own choice, I did.)
Got back from our walk with the dogs this morning to find two strange dogs in our back yard! So while my two are barking and growling at this invasion of their territory, these other two (a black lab and a large shepherd/doberman mix) are snarling and slavering through the fence and it looked like it was going to be a free-for-all. I trapped mine in the truck, but by now the strangers were frightened and feeling very aggressive. It took half an hour to shoo them through the gate, and J just narrowly missed getting bit.
He went off to work in something of a bad mood. Myself, feeling more on the grateful side. Could have been much worse.

EC - I'm so sorry to hear about your father's most recent stroke and hope you all hear good news about his condition very soon. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
I don't know if I should be posting this in The Best Thing - turns out he's had a TIA, and was okay to go home this evening. Why did he have a TIA? The previous day he'd gone for a bike ride - 80yr old bloke and previous stroke victim you understand - and ridden 46 miles. They say the TIA was most likely caused by this. So now he's going to have to be persuaded that although he has recovered from a stroke, he still has to mind what he can and can't do - and 46 miles is obviously a can't from now on!
My son (21) is being pestered at work quite badly ! It has been going on for a while now but he just now came out with it !! We have to get him out of there NOW !

Carine, I'm sorry to hear about your son. Bullying at work is so horrible and misery-making for the victim. It recently happened to my younger son's girlfriend (also 21 and currently living with us) and she ended up by leaving the place. It turned out for the best in the end because a place has come vacant on the nursing degree course she wanted at university, so instead of having to wait until January and trying to find temporary jobs, she's now just begun her vocational training. But the situation where she was before, was untenable. (older woman making her life hell and management too weak and lackadaisical to do something about it). I so hope your son can move on to better things.

When I was about that age I was living in Tacoma and working at a Taco Bell near where I lived. One of the other employees really disliked me for some reason and he was always being mean and rude to me, so much so he was starting to scare me and I got worried when I was walking home alone at night. I got mace just in case. At one point I thought about keying his car cause I hated him so much but I realized he would probably figure out who did it and it wasn't a good idea to do!
I eventually quit because of him and went to work at McDonald's across the street! I wasn't there very long as I ended up moving to Seattle a few months later.

That's good news about your dad, EC - even though he shouldn't be doing all that bike riding, it's good that he's so active, too.
Carine - bullying is a terrible thing. My daughter sometimes has a hard time at school with a particular girl. It is very upsetting as you hate to think of anything hurting your child however old they are. I did mention to the school that I thought C was a little unhappy and now things seem to have improved - I occasionally get a smile (she's 12 and rapidly approaching grumpy 'teenagerism'). I don't like to mention bullying at all to the school as I'm not sure whether that can make it worse for C. I've told her to igore the bully if possible. Sometimes, however, you do have to fight back. Hope everything works out OK for your son.
EC, your dad and my mum would get on well! My mum is 75, but thinks she is in her 40's, if not her 20's! The only reason she wont walk as far as she used to is that she doesnt have a dog to keep her company!

My dad came over to Melbourne to see us and left last Friday, planning to drive from Melbourne to Perth, with lots of stops in outback Australia.
Tonight we got a phone call to say that he was currently in Coober Pedy hospital with a serious bladder infection. Coober Pedy is 9 hours from the nearest major city, and an 18 hour drive from here.
We don't actually know anymore than that at this stage, so we are going to have to see what happens now.

It's a town in the Outback. It's actually a very interesting place I am told. A lot of the people in the town live underground because it is so hot there during the summer, and it is a famous opal mining town.

My dh used to work for a large engineering company and was in charge of the fabrication department on the shop floor (hands on supervisory, not tucked away in an office). During hard times they had to make people redundant and it was always down to my dh to sort out who stayed and who went and to tell them. It was horrid for those who lost their jobs and dh was lucky to keep his, but deciding who stayed and who went was pretty vile too.

My son just pulled a mini tantrum infront of grandparents when I refused him $20 to buy some stupid craze toy that he really needs NOT! I had stern words and sent him away from me. Grandad asked what had happened, and when I told him that he had said I never buy him anything (1 dvd, 2 toys,1 book..need I go on..in the holidays) grandad took him out to the car to do something. Needless to say my son came in with a hug for me and an appology.
It shouldnt have needed grandad to have words. My son doesnt seem to grasp that money does not grow on trees.

I learned this week I have borderline hypertension. Never would have guessed that except that I have family history and am generally high-strung. Well, and the don't-exercise thing likely has something to do with it, even though clinically my weight is in a healthy range.
I am determined not to have to take drugs at the tender age of 37, so I have started a yoga regimen, flaxseed and garlic supplements, and to eat more healthily. I also must must must practice calmness and tranquillity, even in the face of stress at work.
This can be dealt with, but it was an unpleasant surprise at the check-up nonetheless. Unfortunately, worrying about it only makes it worse. :( If anybody knows other natural ways to bring down blood pressure, please let me know!!
Julianne Douglas
10-12-2008, 11:18 PM
I'm sorry to hear your news, Sheramy. I, too, have high blood pressure and am supposed to be taking atenolol, but I don't. Pretty stupid, considering I have a young child and strokes run in my family, but I'm convinced my blood pressure spikes when I'm at the doctor's and is normal the rest of the time (either my home meter reads low or my bp is usually well within the normal range). I don't have any natural remedies to share, unless ignoring the condition counts as one! Take care of yourself, okay?
My worst thing for the next month is that one of my schizophrenic elderly cousins was found dead in his home last Thursday. That part is something of a relief, as he had insulted or assaulted all the people who delivered groceries, refused to bathe, and could not get around anymore, even with a cane. The miserable part is that my 93-year-old mother is his trustee, the house is filled to the ceiling with junk he saved, there will be the standard coroner's inquest, and since Mom can't deal with it, I'm going to be doing the 8-hour drive to LA a lot.
The timing couldn't be less convenient, I have a week-long out-of-state speaker's conference coming up.
The good part is that I'll be getting a lot more HF read than I've had time for lately, as long as it is on audiobook!

A similar thing happened to me with Amazon recently, but I had a different experience. I had ordered three books (from recommendations here) and a DVD of The Miracle Worker which I wanted to use in my classes because we read the play this marking period. After two weeks, I still had not received my order. When I contacted Amazon (it was a Friday), they said if I had not received the order by Monday, they would send out another one. Monday came and no order, so I contacted them and they sent out a new order by FedEx because I insisted I needed the order promptly because I needed to use the DVD in school. The day I received the order via FedEx, I also received the original order (via mail, it took over 3 weeks to get to my house!) and the box looked like it had been through a battle in a war! Now I have to send back the original order. I wonder why we had such different treatment from Amazon?
hard to tell, they were quick to say they would fix it but I'm kinda ticked off about it cause I was really looking forward to reading it.

This might seem petty, but my MIL has had a go at me for something my son did when she was looking after him. Let me explain:
We always meet for coffee on a THursday morning, the in-laws, me and my mum (I call it my Aged Care bit!). Today as soon as I sat down she produced her phone bill with a charge of 0.99c for Gamesworld, the games channel on Foxtel that is pay per use. She had a go at me for the fact that he clicked on it at some point and never said to them. "I dont mind that he did it but he never said to me" she kept saying. HE WONT AS HE IS 11 AND YOU WILL HAVE A GO AT HIM LIKE YOU ARE HAVING A GO AT ME! I wanted to shout after she had kept on and on! It was 99c for petes sake! Tell him! Tell your son his dad my husband but why keep on at me! I felt like giving her the 99c, they have more money than the bank of Australia and are going on about him mistakenly costing them 99c!
Sorry. She has really p!ssed me off!
I know he shouldnt have done it, he is not allowed to here, but I felt as if I had done wrong.
To make matters worse he is round there on Saturday night. Deep joy.

She probably will on Saturday. I told hubby and he said that it was a good job he was not there as he would have given her the $1. He still might!
She gets a bee in her bonnet and dont give up on it. Everything my son does is wrong, he watches tv, plays on the comp, he is not interested in cars. I wonder what ebay will do to me if I dont pay it.

We've had about three double billings at the office for Norton Anti virus subscription renewals, and yes they are freaking impossible to contact. I have to make an appointment (!!!!) to talk to someone. I just called the credit card company and disputed the charges. They (my card issuer) will just whack the money out of Norton's credit card issuer's account until Norton can justify it -- which they can't.
OMFG!!!
This is the money weekend from HELL
Norton decides to automatically update my subscription..I never signed up for such a service. I NEVER do that. So there goes 60.00 bucks outta the account. I had to play tag with them for an hour to get my subscription canceled. Oh and btw in cause you are wondering you cant call them you have to do interenet chat.
My phone people say they never got my payment even though it says on my online statement I sent it.
A seller now tells me they never got my check for an item I bought. I sent it..it was a check. I dont know what else to do!?? Cancel the check which costs another 20 bucks and then pay this person another 20 for an item that isnt worth 20!??!!!!
I am so ****ing pissed right now.

Having the gas board coming round yet again to try and sort out the heating here; it packed in last week so they came down and replaced a valve, but the radiators still aren't getting hot like they should so they're having to come back, which means emptying out the whole cupboard where the boiler is and having all stuff like brooms, vacuum cleaners, ironing-board etc strewn all around the lounge! Mind you it happens every winter so should be used to it by now.

This weekend past we had a great weekend with the dancers of our scottish country dance group in Ostend at the Belgian coast. But having to come back to Ghent Sunday afternoon it started to snow very heavy half an hour before we had to leave and what was normally to be a one hour drive became a 4 hour drive on a snowed under motorway with loads of traffic (apparently everybody wanted to get home at the same time !!) which later on became a very icy road and near Ghent there was a big traffic block ! I was pretty scared ! (I'm the driver here, my partner doesn't have a drivers licence)
I was soooooooo glad to get home finally !

And again...Grrr!
Becky and her boyfriend had a major bust up today. Everything hit the fan. Words said in anger. It started on the phone, then he came round. She didnt want to see him, but eventually she sat in the car with the door open. They talked, and worked it out, but I am not sure how long it will be for. Thing is, we do like him, he is a lovely lad, but they are so alike they argue all the time. We have told her that is not good for her, and we are concerned about her.
Still upset about it.

My motherboard fried and I had to replace my computer at 6pm last night. I have a deadline Dec 12, but today will have to be spent reinstalling programs, transferring files, etc!!! Does anyone know of a good backup system for programs and files? I tried Carbonite (http://www.carbonite.com/)on my former computer, and maybe it was just a coincidence, but that's when all of my troubles started.

Erk, that's nasty!
I back up my system on an external hard-drive. Costs about £60.00 to buy and slots onto the top of my PC as storage. It's only a manual nuts and bolts system though and probably not what you mean.

Like EC, I use an external hard drive. The backup software is Acronis. My partner's the expert, I just do as I'm told, but it seems pretty efficient. I had a computer destroyed by a lightning strike last year, and we were able to reinstall all my programs, email and data files onto a replacement computer in an hour or two. The only things I lost were a few files that had been altered since the last backup.
I also save whatever file(s) I'm currently working on on a solid state memory stick a couple of times a day. Those memory sticks are made of the same stuff they make aircraft black box flight recorders out of, and they will even survive a house fire. I'm told the problem would be finding the memory stick again amongst the ashes, so you keep it in something metal, like a biscuit tin, that you can locate with a metal detector. I hope I never have to put this to the test, but I pass it on in case it's useful :-) Or you can get an off-site back up of important files by putting them on a server somewhere other than your house - I sometimes email files to myself at Yahoo, which is OK for occasional use, or there are commercial services that will let you do secure offsite back ups.
Good luck with the rebuild!
Our whole lives are on our computers, both work and leisure. So the dh also installed a backup system, one he got at Fry's electronics for under $100. In fact he has two -- one in the house, and one in his office, a building out back. In case we have a fire (we remember the place burning in '84 quite well, and we are too suburban here to worry about a general wildfire.)
There is an automatic backup program which records everything in every computer (excepting laptops) to both drives at 3 AM every day.

Yes LCW - my whole life is on my computer as well. I've backed up as much as possible in hotmail and on junk drives, but it's never enough. I will look into your suggestion, Carla, re Acronis. And the external hard drive is definitely looking like the way to go.

My heart goes out to you, Mich. I had a computer literally crash in the middle of writing a book, The Secret Lion, in fact, and I never recovered anything. It just went black and died. I had most of the ms. printed out, so I had to re-type 200 pages. Total nightmare. By the time I was done it took me weeks to get reinspired to finish the darn thing.
I now rely on an external hard-drive that has an automatic backup software that you can program. It can be bought at most BestBuy stores for about $100. There are many on the market; I recommend the heavy-duty ones. Every Friday at 11:00 pm, it kicks in and drags all my files onto it so if the computer becomes possessed or otherwise misbehaves, my docs are safe. It doesn't back up programs, though. I keep the discs of whatever I use so I can always reinstall. I insist when I buy a new computer - which I did this year (I use a laptop and plug in a large flat-screen monitor) - that they give me the system backup discs. Since few new computers these days come with anything but the minimum, I bought the software I needed on my own. I actually prefer as few programs as possible because when my last computer died it killed every bit of software on it and I had no discs to do a reinstall with.
And because I'm now super-paranoid, I do a second backup on memory sticks, which I leave at my office lest the house tumbles in a quake :) I also carry an extra fully loaded memory stick with me in my messenger bag. The downside is keeping track of the most recent files, i.e., backing up whatever you last worked on via separate mechanisms. I've more than once messed that up and had to go searching through my sticks and external drive for the most recent file. But if it's your opus, well worth it.
Hugs. Get lots of them. I loathe computer issues. They drive me nuts.
Sorry to hear about your computer, Michelle! That must be awful!!
Well, it seems I've come down with a cold!! I can't even remember the last time I had one. I started feeling bad on Sat. when we had a second Thanksgiving dinner with some of my family. I though it would pass as most of the time I start feeling run down my body is able to fight it off but not this time!! I have chronic mono but have managed to keep my episodes down to once or twice a year with diet and a healthy lifestyle but other than that I rarely get sick. I forgot how awful it is to have a stuffy stuffed up head and nose! Yuck! Oh well! I just gotta ride it out, I guess!!

In the office where I work they have Backup24, which doesn't cost too much I believe but we also have copies of everything on an external hard disk, which is still the safest thing to do I think.

A friend of mine from university is going back home to Germany in about ten days time, so I planned to go around to their apartment after work today. I decided to walk as it's not that far, but it becomes a bit too far when you walk 4km on a warmish day only for them to not be home. Then I had to walk all the way back to get the bus home. I'm buggered!

Yes, that sucks, Michelle. How very frustrating.
I agree with others that an external hard drive is the way to go for backing up a lot of data -- especially since it's data you use to earn a living. The memory sticks are great, too. We use them where I work, and they are quite handy and so very portable (and I don't think they are that expensive). I also sometimes upload files to my google account that I'm working on. That way, if I'm bored at work, I can tinker around with them and have instant access.

Michelle that is awful. I have a harddrive slaved into my main one to back up everything on to, and so far, I haven't lost anything yet. I like Norton and McAfee -- I'll ask J if he has any ideas for recovery of your files, he's a true geek when it comes to that sort of thing.
Ok, just asked J, he suggested copying everything manually over to an extra harddrive.

A teenage boy in our town who has been missing for several days was found murdered, and four local teens have been charged in his death. My daughter knew the victim from online and has friends who knew the accused teens, so she's naturally quite upset about this. Of course, this is a tragedy whether or not one knows the people involved, but it hits a little deeper when it happens to someone you know.

Might only be around sporadically for a few days. My mother in law died a couple of hours ago - expected in the scheme of things, we just didn't know when. It is a blessing in disguise. I'm a couple of days behind here. Thanks everyone for the kind words, but it's Misfit the kittycat and myself fending on our own unless I 1) go to my brothers house or 2) move in with my elderly neighbor. Both choices I'd prefer to avoid, especially imposing on an 80 something year old lady. My brother's house, well I'd get mothered to death.
I guess I'm grateful they decided the break would heal on it's own without surgery, but I've got a lovely bulky splint on my leg, can't put any weight on it and since I was hopeless as crutches we've had to go for the old lady walker. I've already figured out why they have baskets on the better models :o:p, let alone that I'm going to have to get some work out type gloves to protect my hands, the rubber handle is killing my palms.
Pray for me :):p:confused::o
ROFL, my sister-in-law thinks this is the most creative excuse I've come up yet to avoid the Christmas dinner family function :D
Lots of books to read though, no problems there.
