View Full Version : Non HF Authors
Who do you read when you dont want HF? I tend to go for chick lit type books, or 'family' ones. Some of the authors I look out for are:
Marian Keyes
Freya North
Erica James
Cathy Kelly
Who else tickles your taste buds?

My favorite living authors of non-HF are Anne Tyler and P. D. James. I also read a fair amount of history and biography these days, but my reading's based more on the subject than on the author.

Short stories, usually. My favourites are Saki and Plum.
I tend to bit and bob a great deal and not stick with one author. But I do enjoy
Jodi Picoult
Terry Pratchett
Janet Evanovich
Katie Fforde

If I'm not reading historical fiction I usually read historical non-fiction or political non-fiction. If I'm not reading that I'm reading that I often read sports-based stuff, but I rarely read things that fall under general fiction with the exception of someone like Dickens. So I don't I really have a particular favourite non-historical author.
Before I discovered HF I read Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Neil Gaiman, Stephen King and, Danielle Steele when I was younger. I also like reading about true crime stories from Anne Rule.
I'm rather an eclectic reader: I swing from sci fi/fantasy, general fiction, classic lit, non fiction history and psycological mysteries, depending on my mood. I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, also Kate Atkinson, Jill Paton-Walsh, Timothy Findley, Isabel Allende, Margaret Atwood, Ursula Hegi, Ruth Rendell and Iain Pears.

I really don't care for my fiction these days unless it's set in another century. If I'm not reading HF I'm into a historical romance.

An occasional mystery, but mostly I am doing research either for my WIP or for other stories to be written.

Dorothea Benton Frank
I had completely forgotten about her. Love her low country books. Very funny.

I've ventured into the realm of fantasy by reading Greg Keyes and Alma Alexander.

It's been quite a while since I read something than HF, but if I remember correctly the last books non HF I read were by Katherine Kerr (fantasy) and Robin Cook (medical thriller).
I haven't read much non-HF fiction lately but ages ago I read some Nora Roberts and remember really liking them. I also have a Jodi Picult (sp?) novel here to read at some point.

I'll read Rosina Lippi (Sara Donati's "real" name) and Gail Dayton (fantasy) and, sometimes between historical fiction novels, I'll read a romance -- but only the historical ones -- or vampire novels (like Colleen Gleason's Gardella Chronicles). I'm not into very much of anything that's contemporary.

I read anything from a wide variety of genres. I think it helps me not to get into reading slumps.

I agree. I find that if I read all HF for a while or all 'other stuff' then I get bored and I dont enjoy what I read. Therefore if I read other stuff, auto-bios and lite reading I enjoy getting back into HF, and vice versa.
(At the moment I have an auto-bio waiting for me at the library about a dancer, another one of my passions!)

Clothing and Costume history
Art -- latest read is about Jack Vettriano
And of course, lots of history and biography

Favourite fictional authors outside of HF are Anne Tyler, Jane Gardam, Patrick Gale, Anthony Trollope, Jonathan Kellerman and others... a real mixture.
I can't believe I forgot to mention: I read travel narratives almost as frequently as I read Historic Fiction and History non fiction. And if you think about it, travel and history often merge (at least if its good travel narrative) so it makes sense. I love how a good narrative will lead me to maps, and lead me to history books, which will later lead me to more travel narratives. And since traveling overseas has gotten so expensive, I can enjoy the vicarious trip
I used to love Paul Theroux but his African Safari was so bitter and arrogant that I no longer read him. I do love Jason Elliot, Colin Thurbon, Eric Newby and Patrick Fehmor, but I've read a ton of other books that whet my appetite for more. I like Bill Bryson, but in small dosages (and think his early work was far superior)

I used to read travelogues quite regularly, but I haven't read one for a number of years. I do have a couple here to read too.
