No I'm not trying to direct any one away from this forum, but check (http://www.goodreads.com/)out Good Reads. You can organize your books marking them to read/read, etc. Post reviews and/or comments so years down the road you can recall what you liked about the book. You can also set up your own tags, i.e. Wall Banger, romance, historical, one time read, etc. Feel free to check it out and drop me (http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1375548) a friend invite if you join.

Hey Misfit, my sister sent me over to Goodreads. I just sent you a friend invite under the name Silver Wind.
Um, the link sent me to an Amazon page for the Far Pavilions. Needs fixing, maybe?

So far, I'm enjoying LibraryThing (http://www.librarything.com), although I don't have a barcode reader so I am having to manually add books (arghhhh). I'm hoping it will be well worth the effort when all is said and done.

Now I tried librarything and for some reason it didn't work for me as easily as this one is. Don't recall why though :p

I've been on LibraryThing for over a year now, I think, and don't know how I lived without it. I love it that there are now two successful sites for cataloging and discussing books. Perhaps the people who keep predicting the demise of literature are just a bunch of gloomy sourpusses who don't know what they're talking about.

I've been curious about Goodreads because I've gotten spammed by them a bunch of times. I signed up for an account last year after a friend referred me, and never really used it, but I wonder if they have or had a system where it emails everyone in your contact list on your behalf. Every couple weeks I get an email from people I barely know, on behalf of Goodreads, telling me that they want to compare books and be my friends there. I doubt those emails were sent to me intentionally.

Well, they might have been sent intentionally, Ariadne. Publicists nowadays encourage authors to sign up for MySpace and Facebook accounts and build a friend list that's as large as possible, in order to develop a base for publicizing their books. LibraryThing has a "friend" feature, too, but doesn't notify people by email whenever they get a friend request. I've gotten friend requests at Facebook from people I don't know at all, and I always get an email for each request.

Has anyone been able to import their books from LibraryThing to Goodreads? I tried it, but no luck, but admittedly I didn't try very hard. I didn't want to expend the effort if it isn't even possible.

You get an email if someone invites you as a friend, and I've been getting emails when my friends make changes/comments, etc. but I think that can be turned off in the settings feature.

Yes, you can make it so that you do not get an e-mails if you do not want. Mine is set up so I only get e-mails about friend requsts

I can believe some of the requests, like those from authors, may have been deliberately sent. Others I'm sure weren't. I've done some googling around and see that others have noticed this issue with them too (requests sent on their behalf without their knowing about it).
I get notification when people friend me on Librarything. It may be a setting in their preferences.

I have profiles at GoodReads (Ludmilla) and LT (LudmillaLotaria). I started them around the same time to see which I liked better, but am probably going to just maintain LT going forward. Good Reads is fine for tracking what you read, socializing, etc., but I'm just more geared toward the database approach, and I really like the home page feature that LibraryThing rolled out recently. It makes it easier for me to track my interests. I have some friends who use and like Shelfari, which is a site similar to GoodReads (but has a more visual interface).
I think there are issues with any of these sites if you're trying to catalogue older books w/out ISBNs. It's an arduous process, and I made the mistake of trying to upload a bunch of books in an import and am still trying to figure out what I missed.
Anyway... feel free to visit or friend me at either site. Bookish friends are always welcome. :)

Sorry for the double-post. Just noticed your comment after posting. I would export goodreads to excel, and from the Excel file, only import the Author, Title and ISBN columns in LT, to get a proper import. Don't bother to import books without ISBN's as LT's import won't load them.

I have Library Thing but I have got out of the habit of updating it. Another option is Shelfari, which I haven't used. I do use Visual Bookshelf on Facebook as well.

Sorry, I don't think I've been back there for quite some time. If I can remember how to log back in I'll accept the invite :p:o

I use Librarything. I think it's very handy. I'm still adding books, though.

I use LibraryThing too and think it's great. (And it was thanks to me being on there that diamondlil was able to tell about this new forum!)
At one point, I started adding loads of books but stalled after about 200, and then decided to only add books as I read them or as they occurred to me. I would be nice to have all of my books up on there already but it is time-consuming (though more on the tags than the book itself).
But it is a fantastic site - though I don't use it much for the social aspects yet.

If you'd like to try LT again, send me a PM on this board. We'll get squared away.

A couple of people have invited me to a new book site called Abonii. I haven't started to really check it out yet, but they seem to like it. I will probably stick with Librarything and VirtualBookshelf on Facebook ..... when I log into either of them! :o
who ever found GoodReads, thank you it's a neat site. I finally started listing my books asuddenly got overwhelmed cause there is so many.
