Which book would you like to nominate to be December 2009's book of the month?

Leave your suggestions in this thread prior to 27 October 2009

Perhaps something with a Christmassy or wintry setting?

Perhaps something with a Christmassy or wintry setting? Now, for something completely different! We could go for a short historical play, Lion in Winter - only 128 pages. Everyone is so busy in December so how about it?

I like Leyland's suggestion for a quick read during a very busy month.....My choice is Howard Fast's "The Crossing" a compelling American Revolution read about the hardships and tribulations of Washington and his army crossing the Delaware River .....

Oh yeah, I'd be up to that, esp taking a look at the accuracy then versus what is known now. Ditto for the play Becket.

I recently re-watched Becket the film, last seen when I was very young and rather historically naive. Although the acting of Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton remains superb, I was horrified at the portrayal of the sharp, vigorous Henry II as weak, petualant, and self-indulgent and Eleanor of Acquitaine as a snippy, sanctimonious cipher!

I'll nominate Claire Letemendia's novel ""The Best of Men" ("http://www.amazon.com/Best-Men-Claire-Letemendia/dp/0771052707/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256447980&sr=8-1), a gripping novel of adventure and intrigue set during the build-up to the English Civil War- I couldn't put it down.

I second. I want to read this as well. And maybe by Dec. my plate will have cleared off so I can tackle it. :)

I'd be a big fan of reading the Lion in Winter... A play feels a bit different and we could get a lively discussion going, I'm sure.

Wow! I've never voted on this before, as I usually have too many books to read, making it pointless to vote myself another one. However, I met Claire Letemendia at a party last month, just before her book was launched in the UK, and I already have a copy, bought on the strength of that meeting.
Therefore, I vote for Best of Men too.

Annis contributed a review (http://www.HistoricalNovels.info/Best-of-Men.html) of The Best of Men for HistoricalNovels.info, which made this novel shoot to the top of my "must-read" list. Unfortunately, it's not out in the U.S. yet - we might want to save this for a BOM sometime next year when, hopefully, it will be.

Good thinking, Margaret. If anyone wants a taster before Best of Men comes out in the States, Claire Letemendia has posted an excerpt from the start of her book here (http://claireletemendia.com/bom-excerpt.pdf). Although the book wears the author's scholarship lightly, it acts as a strong framework for the story. She looks gorgeous, too- not that something like that would influence Ben, I'm sure-- :)

For anyone wondering, the title is taken from Aristotle's "Politics"
--"passion perverts the minds of rulers, even when they are the best of men". ...

Yes I think it's a trilogy, with The Leopard Unleashed being the final part. I think it's the Ravenstow Trilogy or am I getting confused with another trilogy?!
