Kate Voegele. I just recently discovered her through a thread (elsewhere) discussing favourite versions of Leonard Cohen's song "Hallelujah". You wouldn't believe how many singers have had a go at it. My favourite remains the Jeff Buckley version, but John Cale, Rufus Wainwright and KD Laing have also done interesting interpretations on the theme.
Anyway, I thought Kate's version pretty good- despite that fact that it's very much a man's song

I collect versions of this song. A lot of people including my best friend cite the Jeff Buckley version as THE one. I prefer Rufus Wainwright's, but I can recognise Buckley's absolute talent. My current favourite that I'm going to post to my blog when I get a minute is the Welsh version by Brigyn.

One of the best is Christmas now is Drawing Near by Sneake's Noyse, a collection of Medieval songs and carols including Tomorrow shall be my Dancing Day, which is one of my favourites of all time.

Hi Chuck

Yes, the Youtube clip is a song from a CD just called "The Woolshed Sessions", lovely retro stuff. And talking about retro, I've currently got the Grateful Dead playing "I Need a Miracle' in the background. We've got most of our music on the computer these days- I just set it on "shuffle" and get a wonderfully unpredictable selection of music, old and new.

I enjoyed the Ron Sexsmith :)

I am going to re watch "The Draughtsman's Contract" made in 1982, starring Anthony Higgins, Janet Susman, and Anne Loise Lambert,........ Jacobean England....Beautifully filmed, costumes and sets,...The architecture is top shelve.....Developing story is slow, yet intriguing, and absurd at times....To like.... or not to like..It's a visual trip to the past....

I haven't seen those films Nona, so I could be totally barking up the wrong tree. They're not Irish, but have you come across Scottish band Capercaille?

Leyland does indeed have a few ideas for you, Nona. I like to listen to Celtic rock infused with blues, Latin and jam beats. I don't care for Irish Celtic/punk rock like Flogging Molly all that much most of the time.

If you want to view elizabeth's MySpace (link below), I have several Celtic bands on my favorites and then lots more if you browse all my friends. I treat MySpace like my desktop jukebox so that I can listen to all sorts of music at work.

Take a listen to Enter the Haggis, Scythian, Rathkeltair, The Clumsy Lovers, The Elders, Coyote Run, Greenwich Meantime, Barleyjuice, Clandestine, Gaelic Storm, Great Big Sea, Gael Warning, Icewagon FLU, Miranda Mulholland, Slide Show Baby, The Rogues, or Young Dubliners for a taste of what's out there. There are many bands like these making the festival and pub restaurant circuits.

You can't go wrong with the Bothy Band. With fiery instrumentals they pretty much set the standard for the genre called Celtic.

Linda Thomson lost her voice for the next two years as a result of hysterical dysphonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysphonia) set on by her breakup with her former husband. She made a new start in 1984, singing with "The Home Service" at the National Theatre's production of medieval mystery plays and in 1985 she released her solo album One Clear Moment, then fell silent for eleven years.
I'd never heard of dysphonia before.

I recall seeing Fairport Convention in concert many years ago when they did a tour of NZ, and have recent albums by both Richard and Linda somewhere in my collection.

A friend recently lent me the DVD of a Scottish band called Runrig . This concert at Loch Ness was probably the high point of their career, though they are still around. They are associated with Scottish nationalism and attempts to keep Scottish Gaelic alive. This one's for Chuck :)

She was not the only woman who married a member of Fairport Convention to suffer dysphonia. So did Shirley Collins, but I think in her case it lasted longer.

How bizarre! It's not something that's all that common either, I wouldn't have thought. I magine the frustration of being rendered voiceless when yo're a singer. I always feel sorry for Julie Andrews who lost her ability to sing after an operation.

Someone else has heard of Runrig! I didn't know of them at all until I was lent this DVD called "Wheel in Motion", of a 1991 concert performed at Loch Lomond ( Sorry, I think I said Loch Ness earlier)

Robin Williamson has some great humouros stories as well as knowing how to tell the Arthurian ones right. Has a book of them too which I had read as a kid.

Anyway, I just found a great Hungarian folk band called Kolinda. It isn't the kind of brash cymbaly music or even Marta Sebestyen, but it sounds a lot more ancient. Mostly minor key on fiddle and pipe! The kind of thing which sounds mysterious and ancient, even though it isn't old at all.

I've got my iPod repeating the Pride and Predjudice soundtrack over and over. Absolutely love the score and just ordered the songbook for 12 of the songs from Amazon. My summer music project is to learn to play them all well and then to enjoy my own P&P music concert. Getting my piano tuned would really help, too!

I like everything and anything! Right now I am in love with Fairy Dance by Ashley MacIsaac and David's Jig by Natalie McMaster which are "World" gendre music. I am also going through an Alphaville kick plus, I like the songs "Up Among the Heather" by the Irish Rovers, Lady GaGa's "Poker Face", Katy Perry's Hot N Cold, and "Pancho and Lefty" by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. How's that for variety! :D

EC2, Spiers and Boden are the front men of Bellowhead. On there own they just go under their own names and are brilliant (see my above post) but as Bellowhead...............FANTASTIC.
Lickily for me they play a gig in Cardigan but I keep an eye out for when Bellowhead are playing in England so I can combine a trip to see them whilst visiting relatives at the same time, they are really that good.

If you ever get the chance go and see them I'm positive you'll not be disappointed.

Have just put in an order with Amazon for a CD of recently rediscovered music, a treasure trove of material dating back as far as the 12th century, unplayed for centuries until it was just found. "God shall be praised: Music from the Lune Convent". Heard some of it on NPR this afternoon and it made all the Gregorian chant sound like amateur hour.

In the meantime, listening to Bach's cello suites is keeping me sane while I (try to) write.

Story about why they decided to do this here;

Holy cow, can this be for real? I've just been listening to some songs from Bob Dylan's "Christmas in the Heart" album. Haven't decided yet whether they're rather good or very bad, but they're certainly something!

Here's a sample track, called "Must be Santa". I think Bob must have invited in the Gogol Bordello band for this startling gypsy punk meets Christmas hoe-down version :)

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/11/16/premiere-bob-dylans-must-be-santa-video-from-christmas-lp/#

Amazing all acoustic show, with the clear voices and exquisite guitar that only acoustic music can give us. Went out and found some used copies of Bookends, Bridge over troubled Waters and Sound of Silence (had these as cassetts, never got the CDs) Think I'll listen to these this week in the car.
