Oh, and EC's The Running Vixen is available for preorder, but alas, no cover art as yet. Just 200 days to go...
I have seen the cover art prelims Telynor and I do like the cover. Full face this time. This is a re-issue of my second novel of the early romantic ones, so they're keeping the general cover style. However with the next brand new novel (spring 2010) they are repackaging - don't know quite what yet! I've just been to my News blog and pasted up a copy of the prelim cover. http://elizabethchadwicknews.blogspot.com/

Hi EC,
I love the new cover for The Greatest Knight! It is on my list of must own (library does not carry it and I have heard it is wonderful). Hopefully I will have it in time for some great summer reading. :)

I like that, much better than the one I have, the old MMPB. Kind of a violetish background I think.

Oooooh, I do like the cover. And it's lovely to see a face instead of the torso shots. And congratulations on the new book coming up. (rubs paws in glee) -- Telynor

That would be the Signet one? - very rare. Signet went belly up not long after that and they pulped most of the copies of TRV.
Telynor, Yes, we're moving on from headless and even half-head now. I do like the 'feel' of the TRV cover and finally, I get a heroine who actually wears a head covering - even if her hair is still exposed!!!

EC, is there an earlier version of The Greatest Knight than the one I bought from the UK a few years ago? The cover looks virtually identical to the "new" Sourcebooks one that you have posted on your website. The only difference seems to be the way your name is placed and a tagline about being the story of the queen's champion.

Source bought the rights to the Rostant cover for the USA edition of TGK and put in their own shout line about the Queen's Champion (have to get 'Queen on the cover somehow - LOL!). The Rostant cover for TGK has been so successful, that they felt it was the best one for the book. There are only two editions. The UK one (hardcover and paperback) and now the USA one (well there's the Italian one too, but that's titled Il Scarlatte Leone (sp without looking!).

Definitely a beautiful cover - nice to see a book cover with a thoughtful looking, and not vaguely staring at nothing, woman who is also dressed appropriately for her station. I assume she's dressed properly - but so much better than the one on the horseback cover.

Thanks EC. There were just a lot of references to a "new" cover for the US version of The Greatest Knight, but since it was the same as the UK version I had, I was a little confused.
Also, Amazon UK has the cover up for The Running Vixen (the same picture EC posted on her blog).

I like TRV new cover very much; it's in keeping with the other EC books and she's very evocative. The old Ballantine is priceless, though. Look at that enormous swashy font!
I'm looking forward to Source's TGK and, yes, much better to follow up with the sequel before LWC.
BTW: I have a UK hc of LWC I didn't even recall I'd bought!! I found it the other day while re-adjusting some of my book crates to make room for - sigh - more books. I must have bought it during a trips to the UK but I don't recall having read it, so it must have gotten mistakenly stashed it away during one of my book shelf-emptying binges to create extra space for research material in my study (which happens far more frequently than I care to admit :)
Anyway, now I have it and can read it. Very fun!

It's great isn't it? The 'best' Ballantine cover is the one for Daughters of the Grail which is in pink watered silk effect with a woman in a pink night dress riding a pink horse and a quote from Bertrice Small!

LOL re boxes of books. Mine that won't fit in the available bookshelves are all stashed in top cupboards in various built in wardrobes. So goodness knows what's at the back where my arms aren't quite long enough unless I get out the big step ladder!

I've seen a listing on Amazon US for The Greatest Knight but not for Lords of the White Castle. EC, I hope you make sure Amazon gets all the reviews moved over to the new edition. Some times they seem to get it and some times they don't.
Speaking of Lords, are we going to get a new cover so I have to buy a new one of that too?

Nona and Misfit:
TGK is out September 1st in the USA - very strong advance orders from booksellers so I'm told, which is good, but I'm not counting chickens. But, since advance orders have been so strong, Source has decided to put back Lords of the White Castle and publish The Scarlet Lion to follow on - which makes tons more sense to me anyway. If these two sell, then next up will probably be Shadows and Strongholds (just about got the rights back from St Martins Press at last) and Lords of the White Castle, but that will depend on ongoing contracts since I only signed up for two books to see how Source do with them. They wanted all the backlist, and that may come but talking of chickens, you don't put them all in the basket at once! I will ask my editor Shana Drehs about the moveover of review - thanks for the heads up Misfit!

I think it's some sort of painted copy of a Pre-Raphaelite painting that's non medieval. There are some weird and wonderful ones out there. I have a large print one for The Running Vixen somewhere with the heroine dressed in a sleeveless Roman frock and with windswept Cindy Crawford hair!
I am going to meet my editor on Monday in London and I'm going to ask her when I can finally get to show my cover for To Defy a King to the world. Met the top buyer for one of our major bookchains at a do in London last week and as soon as he was introduced he remarked on the cover of TDAK (he'd had a sneak preview) and that it was 'very sumptuous' and 'different' and he loved it. I think it's going to take a lot of people by surprise!

It's interesting what you say about the older covers. I liked them, but they weren't doing the business re picking up new customers - or rather they were but at too slow a rate. As soon as my publishers went down the Half-head nice dress route, sales rocketed and I mean rocketed. It wasn't that I had suddenly become a tons better author, although one always hopes to improve, it was the packaging, which clearly appealed to the majority. Since those early days which were all really started by The Other Boleyn Girl, the 'headless woman, nice frock' image has proliferated to saturation point. Nowadays in its place, we are seeing full figure, nice frock. Often still with a window somewhere around.
The new cover for To Defy a King, which I am hoping to share soon, once I've got the OK from my UK editor, pays homage to the above criteria in certain ways, but it is totally original too. No one else has a cover like this one at the moment!

Thanks folks! We knew we needed to do something different this time around and my editor was determined. We started off by having detailed cover discussions back in Feb of this year about what we wanted. We had various novel covers spread out before us. Philippa Gregory's Other Queen the UK version, Vanora Bennet's headless turquoise, CW's orange dress, Emma Campion's red tablecloth, Wolf Hall, close up blokey armour historicals. You name it, it was there. Also film + TV posters and film stills - Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth, The Tudors, Lord of the Rings, Tristan and Isolde. Also high-end glossy fashion magazine adverts where they are selling perfumes, or handbags or shoes or clothes. I pointed out that these adverts were selling a product and telling a story. There's nothing passive about them. We needed to get that feel into a novel while still saying 'historical fiction.' And we wanted it to say 'big book.' So we went for 'filmic and sumptuous.' We - or should I say Little Brown, hired a photographer (will have to find out who he is) and hired a dress (actually green originally would you believe it?!) and fashion model Jade Cresswell from the MotModels agency.http://www.motmodel.com/models/detail.asp?model_id=2827 They did a photo shoot and then worked for ages on the cover design. I only saw the prelims about 2 weeks ago. It has actually changed a bit since the one I've put up. There's a bit more colour in the coronet now - hints of red among the dark stones.
Thus far the response from UK booksellers has been of the 'Wow!' variety, so we're keeping our fingers crossed. However, I'm not counting my chickens...never wise to do that in publishing. But I am still doing a bit of a happy dance.
Hope that the book lives up to expectations. (she says, feeling slightly :eek::eek:).

Very interesting, EC. I'm happy to hear my orange dress helped to inform the deliberations:p
I really like the dramatic "fashion ad" feel; obviously, as it's what I like about my Confessions cover. I think your new cover makes a statement, and these days that is what's needed in our crowded marketplace. I'm sure it'll do splendidly. The sheer richness of it begs a closer look!

It was particularly the texture of the flecks of gold on your UK cover C.W. That sort of thing doesn't show up online of course. It's the same with the UK cover of The Other Queen which was why we were looking at that. The background texture doesn't show up online, but in the hand, it's this rich, glistening, damask midnight blue. If you're doing historical, it helps to have that touchy feely aspect too I think. The sensory engagement needs to start even before you crack open the book.

I LOVE this. I love it all, the red, the background, the girl, the reflection. It's so clever how she is wearing the coronet in the reflection. The amount of detail is just right - enough to draw you in, not enough to overload it. I can't think of a cover I've liked better than this, ever.
If you do another blog post would one of the design team be willing to provide a quote? It's always fascinating to hear about a cover from their point of view.

I've written to my editor mooting the suggestion and I expect the answer will be yes. I'd do a full interview I think. I would think in the interests of PR it might come out nearer publication date. It's the first time I've worked with this particular designer as she's new to Little Brown - she's nice to talk to. I sent her costume picks, detailed descriptions of Mahelt, both her looks and her personality. I also sent her the soundtrack so she could get a feel for her in song. Gawd knows what the poor girl thought (but obviously it worked!)

Oh, yes, that is an excellent point: the textural aspects are key. I love that about paperbacks, especially: here in the US at least, they're doing less textural stuff on hardcovers than they used to because of cost. They did a lot of texture on PG's new cover but otherwise I'm not seeing all that much of it. But you still get it in trade and I agree, it makes a difference. It's got an immediate jewel-like quality.
What are they doing texturally on this cover? I can see that ruby-red background spot varnished to a shimmer. Delicious.

It would be delicious I agree, but I don't know how far they'll go with that. To have that background appearance however is a start. My editor's on maternity leave at the moment. The holding pattern editor is great, but maternity leave editor is senior ed at the company and this is her (other) baby, so I will probably know more about texturising once she's back in the spring.
does anyone know, I have not checked, if we can pre-order it?
You can at Amazon UK, Nona, so I should think you could most other places.
Sourcebooks are going to release it in the USA, but probably around early 2011.
I think I might just pre-order it then, I don't mind if it's from the UK and I don't think I can wait til 2011, too far.

I prefer the older covers that have a historical scene on them as well, but Im a guy who enjoys the historical parts more than the romance parts. I have a hard time buying the new ones since they look like romance books:o
This being said I completely understand that the newer covers are better for sales which is great! A few years ago I dont think I was able to find your books here in the USA in the bookstore so I ordered online. Just the other day I went into the bookstore and saw the The Greatest Knight and I think Lords of the White Castle. They were displayed in a very noticeable way so that was nice to see. I usually buy books online now anyway, but I do very much enjoy a bookstore. (I Just get frustrated when they dont have what I want).
Any chance we could have two covers one for romance and one historical? Kidding....Love your books thanks for writing them.
Cheers
I prefer the older covers that have a historical scene on them as well, but Im a guy who enjoys the historical parts more than the romance parts. I have a hard time buying the new ones since they look like romance books:o

Saxon1974 - I would LOVE to have 2 sets of covers. I've actually often thought that myself, so no need to kid! I'd need to sell in J.K. Rowling quantities for that to happen though. Thanks for your kind words :-)

Just caught up with this thread. Love the TDAK cover. When the headless women first appeared I liked them but very bored with them now. The playing card effect of the reflected heads and the added bit of intrigue with the crown on the reflected image is eye-catching and the rich but simple background is perfect (As I'm sure the contents will be, too! Can't wait.)
Spotted this on Amazon UK (the cover for EC's The Leopard Unleashed being reissued later this year).
I'm really pleased with this one - the first cover presented for this title caused an author and agent meltdown couple of months ago, but this is more like it.

Is that the same model from TDAK?
Yes, same photoshoot, but not immediately obvious I hope! Originally they were going to use a spare pic from the set from which Vanora Bennet's People's Queen cover and the Poesie Graeme Evans covers were taken, but having tried it, the results were pretty eeeuwww! With a brand new novel there are bigger budgets for covers, but re-issues don't have the same funds allocated, so spare shots tend to get used.

I like the golden effect on this cover a lot, EC. It's very moody and appealing. Great title, too. (I have a thing for leopards).

EC, one thing I have really enjoyed about your books besides the knockout writing, is just how interesting and classy the covers are! Nothing cheesy there, and I feel no need to ever cover them up on the commuter train... :o The art geek in me finds them a real refresher after what usually ends up on the shelves.
Really looking to get my paws on the new ones for this year. TDK isn't here yet, but I haven't reached the anxious stage quite yet.

I thought it was the same model too, she had a lot of costume changes that day! It's a lovely cover though. Do you know if all your books will be getting the new look?

Same costume just photoshopped colours. Yes, they're gradually going to repackage the lot - so I'm told. We're just starting work on the cover of Lady of the English, which may end up with two women on the cover. May have a change of title yet too but we're in discussion at the moment.

Ooh, I've not heard of Lady of the English, presumably that's an OOP book?

Well, you've been warned!:D
This one is for "The Wild Hunt" (though the title of this edition is actually something like "love of convenience")

This is "Daughters of the Grail" (here known as "Magdalina's heiress")
http://pics.livejournal.com/twilight_krista/pic/000bsrrt
This is "The Marsh King's Daughter" (the title here is "The King's treasure, or to be tempted by passion")

"The Love Knot" (or to be tempted by loyalty) huh?

And the freakish one!
"The Conquest" (or Long Lost Love)

I don't whose idea was it to put these "ors", they're just lame!
Another one for "The Marsh King's Daughter" (Still "The King's Treasure" here)

Those are hilarious! :D
Some I haven't seen either Sintra because they never sent us copies, so thank you so much for posting! The one with the kiss with the heroine wearing a ruff is new to me! I have the others.
I recently put the overseas editions I do have on Youtube, but I didn't post it to the forum. However, if anyone wants a look, here it is.

Could we use one of Sintra's covers to revive our Cheesy Cover Competition?

As long as no one complains about the cover I pick I will be happy to do so.
