I think that when known portraits of the person exist, there's no reason not to use them, or at any rate a picture drawn from one of them. I was so disappointed not to find a portrait of Juana on the cover of the Last Queen. (Sorry, CW, I know authors rarely get to make those choices.)
She's easily as good-looking as the portrait of somebody else they used.

Yes, you're right. Authors have no choice! I liked their concept, though, even if they used a portrait of Joanna of Aragon, Fernando's sister. I wasn't as disappointed as I might have been, because she is still Juana's aunt and Juana was said to closely resemble her father's side of the family. Plus, I felt the cover captured the spirit of the book. Juana wasn't painted all that often and most of her portraits are rather flat. However, the audio book uses one of the decent portraits of her as well as a snippet from a fanciful recreation of her with the celebrated coffin. I must confess, this is one of my favorite Last Queen covers:

I like that cover too, even though I don't like Juana. Catherine of Aragon should have been queen regnant instead.
